Herbie Herbert Dies At 73

He was the longtime manager of the band “Journey.”

Walter James “Herbie” Herbert II, who went on to manage Journey for nearly two decades, has died of natural causes at his home in Orinda, California, on Monday according to reports by Variety. He was 73 years old at the time.

His longtime assistant Maria Hoppe, who is the executive director of Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, told the principal outlet of news that the music manager had been suffering from a “prolonged illness.”

Herbert started his career working for tour promoter Bill Graham, initially as a roadie for Santana before becoming the manager of Frumious Bandersnatch. Following the breakup of Santana, Herbert reformed Journey in 1973 and remained the band’s manager until 1993.

Following Mick Brigden, the ex-Rolling Stones tour manager who oversaw the management side of Bill Graham Presents, and Dell Furano, the creator of Winterland Productions marketing, both of whom died in September, Herbert is the third Graham business colleague to pass away in recent months.

His wife Maya, kids Seaya and Katherine, brother Robert, and sister Katherine survive him.
