This is the actor’s fifth film to surpass the $1 billion mark.
Tom Holland may be the next big thing in Hollywood, since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has officially topped Sony’s list of highest-grossing films of all time surpassing the $1 billion mark worldwide in only 12 days.
Spider-Man earned $81.5 million to its already impressive international earnings from 61 countries, during the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates, down 69 percent from its debut weekend, when it became the second-highest opening box office ever after “Avengers: Endgame.”
The Sony and Marvel picture has now earned $467 million in North American cinemas, more than double the domestic total of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which was the year’s previous No. 1 film.
It’s also the first movie in the pandemic to gross $1 billion, and it’s tied for third place with Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the quickest film ever to achieve it, despite its lack of a Chinese release.
Tom Holland reprises his role as Spider Man for the third time in “No Way Home,” directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Zendaya, his real-life partner, plays the superhero’s love interest in the film.
On Christmas morning, former Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger congratulates Tom Holland on the success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
“Hey @TomHolland1996 …I’m glad we had that discussion about Spider-Man and congratulations on the success of @SpiderMan No Way Home! Merry Christmas, too!” the former CEO tweeted.
For those who haven’t watched “No Way Home,” the multiverse film has characters from Sony’s history, including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, as well as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man.
