CNN’s Jeff Zucker Resigns Over Undisclosed Relationship With Top Executive

The relationship was unveiled during the network's probe into former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo's behavior.

CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker, the renowned news executive who rebuilt the legendary network, announced his resignation effective immediately on Wednesday morning.

Mr. Zucker’s sudden departure shook his staff since prior to his email arriving in their inbox just after 11 a.m. ET, the staff had no clue what was in store.
The decision placed CNN’s future into doubt at a vital time: the network is ready to launch a high-stakes streaming service, and its parent company, WarnerMedia, is poised to be purchased by Discovery Inc.
He likewise expressed an interest in staying on for a short time to assist with the transition, but WarnerMedia had other plans.
His abrupt resignation also occurred less than two months after firing prime time anchor Chris Cuomo for allegedly instructing his brother, then-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, on how to handle sexual misconduct charges.

“As part of the investigation into Chris Cuomo’s tenure at CNN, I was asked about a consensual relationship with my closest colleague, someone I have worked with for more than 20 years,” Zucker stated in a memo.

“I acknowledged the relationship evolved in recent years. I was required to disclose it when it began but I didn’t. I was wrong. As a result, I am resigning today.”

Although he did not identify his colleague in the note, CNN anchor Brian Stelter stated during a broadcast Wednesday that the connection was with Allison Gollust, the network’s chief marketing officer, and that she would be keeping her job at the network.

Jeff Zucker joined CNN in 2013 after leaving his position as CEO of NBCUniversal, and although he admits things may have gone differently, his time with the network has been an “amazing run.”
