The attacker even had a gun-shaped knife.

On Tuesday, comedian Dave Chappelle was assaulted on stage during his act as part of the Netflix Is A Joke Festival, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

The 23-year-old man named Isaiah Lee allegedly stormed onto the stage, attacked Chappelle, and later tried to escape before being apprehended by security backstage.
This was shortly after the comedian informed the audience that he needed to tighten up his security personnel following his statements on the transgender community last year.

The Los Angeles Police Department has also verified the occurrence and informed NBC that the male suspect was armed with a fake pistol that could “eject a knife blade,” however it was unclear whether he attempted to use it to the comic.

The suspect was transported to the hospital in an ambulance for his injuries due to the incident. He is currently being jailed on a $30,000 bond and will be charged with criminal assault with a dangerous weapon.

The footage of the incident has created a buzz on social media sites, despite organizers’ efforts to hold attendees’ phones throughout the duration of the event.

Regardless of what happened, Chappelle resumed his show and even brought it up, indicating that the assailant was a trans man: “I grabbed the back of that n****s head; his hair was spongy, absorbent. Listen, I just want to say I’ve had an incredible time.”

His fellow comic Chris Rock even joined him on stage and said, “Was that Will Smith?” referencing Will Smith’s infamous Chris Rock slap during the Oscars after dropping a G.I. Jane joke to his wife, Jada.

Dave Chappelle’s Controversial Jokes

Dave Chappelle’s last year special, “The Closer” incorporates hostile and upsetting jokes about trans individuals and the LGBTQ community. One of those is how “gender is a fact,” and recounted to an anecdote about thumping a lesbian woman.

As we previously reported, critics who claim to have been offended by his jokes against “trans” and “non-binary” people call his views to be transphobic.

About 100 protesters, 30 coming from the workforce of Netflix at that time, also gathered in front of the media company’s studio complex in Los Angeles.

They demanded that the Netflix Special be pulled out by the company among a litany of demands for equality and an “inclusive” workplace.

In response to this, Chappelle has stated that he is willing to meet with transgender Netflix workers and other members of the transgender community to hear their stories, but only under certain conditions.

He also rejects the accusations that he refused to do so over contentious statements he made in The Closer, and went on to say that the uproar stemmed from business interests and that he has received support from some members of the LGBTQ+ community.
