What an unexpected turn of events.
In a message posted to his Instagram Story on Wednesday, “General Hospital” alum Steve Burton and his pregnant wife Sheree Burton announced their separation after 23 years of marriage.
“I wanted to clear something up,” his statement began, “Sheree and I are separated.” The now-former couple has three children, Makena, Jack, and Brooklyn, and has been married since 1999.
“She recently announced that she’s expecting her 4th child. The child is not mine. We are still co-parenting our three beautiful kids. We would appreciate privacy at this time. Much luv, Steve.”
In a conversation with Soaps In Depth in 2019, Burton raved over their relationship, saying, “I have the greatest wife in the world. She’s just an incredible mom and partner. I couldn’t do any of the stuff I do without her. It’s the cliché of, ‘Behind every man is a great woman.’ She’s everything.”
“Unfortunately, General Hospital has let me go because of the vaccine mandate. I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions, and both of those were denied, which, you know, hurts,” he said in a statement acquired by PEOPLE.
“But this is also about personal freedom to me. I don’t think anyone should lose their livelihood over this. But with that being said, you know me, I’ll always be grateful for my time at General Hospital, I love it there.”
He concluded his statement by alluding to the role he has portrayed since 1991, “Maybe one day if these mandates are lifted, I can return and finish my career as Jason Morgan. That would be an honor.”
