Emilia Clarke experienced an aneurysm during the early run of Game of Thrones.

English actress Emilia Clarke is known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen, a.k.a. the Mother of Dragons, in HBO’s epic fantasy television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019). Many applaud her for her portrayal of the character. But, it’s not a secret what she went through in the early run of the show.

Emilia stated in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker that she had experienced a subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm in February 2011. After undergoing an emergency endovascular coiling operation, she developed aphasia. At one point, she couldn’t remember her own name.

In 2013, the actress underwent another surgical treatment for a second aneurysm. Her first aneurysm occurred shortly after the first season of Game of Thrones ended. The incident happened while she was working out with her personal trainer.

At the time, Emilia began feeling as though her head was going to explode while working out. Still, she continued working out despite the discomfort. Yet, her trainer insisted they should take a break. A few minutes later, the actress was taken to the hospital.

Following the operation, doctors discovered she had another minor aneurysm that could cause problems in the future. And although it didn’t affect the production of the next two seasons of Game of Thrones, she had it removed before the fourth installment kicked off filming.

Now, the actress has recovered and changed her diet and workout routine.

Emilia Clarke's Weight Loss Tricks

The main keys to Emilia’s successful weight loss:

  • She followed a strict diet and exercise for her role in Terminator Genisys
  • She ate less fat, had to limit her sodium intake, and counted her calories every day
  • She also trained weapons every day
  • She went on a more straightforward and cleaner approach after that
  • She follows the Clean and Lean program
  • She consumes a lot of protein, a lot of vegetables, no meat other than fish, and no processed food
  • She cut down refined sugar, refined white flour, and processed meals
  • She goes to the gym every day and focuses on bodyweight training
  • She also tries yoga, Pilates, and HIIT

Emilia Clarke had to exercise and go on a diet in preparation for a movie in 2015.

Despite suffering from a serious health problem, Emilia is very dedicated when it comes to her craft. She pushes her limits just to portray whatever role is given to her perfectly. In fact, she made a lot of preparations doing the 2015 sci-fi/action film Terminator Genisys.

The actress, who played Wrong Sarah in the movie, had to endure rigorous training and must follow a balanced diet. She enjoys eating and occasionally indulges in treats. But, during the filming of Terminator Genisys, Emilia became very careful about what she consumed.

Her eating choices were extremely limited, and she must be engaged in strict training. She ate less fat, had to limit her sodium intake, and counted her calories every day. During that period, she worked extremely hard in the gym.

“I’ve been spending all day, every day in weapons training… On top of that, I have not been allowed to eat anything that might taste good at all,” Emilia said in one of her interviews.

The actress trained with weapons every day for several hours, both before and during the filming. She was also doing a lot of weight lifting and kickboxing. But, like her Terminator diet, her fitness routine was not sustainable.

Her approach to fitness has now changed.

What is Emilia Clarke's diet plan?

Emilia treats her body much more kindly and sticks to a far less strict diet. She adheres to the Clean and Lean program created by James Duigan, her personal trainer. This diet is much more holistic, emphasizing clean and simple foods.

This entails consuming a lot of protein, a lot of vegetables, no meat other than fish, and no processed food. Emilia’s trainer tells her to avoid refined sugar, refined white flour, and processed meals. He also instructs her to read food labels carefully.

A product is not always healthy just because it is labeled as gluten-free. It can still be loaded with unhealthy preservatives or sugar. The good thing about this diet is that it’s personalized for each person. Thus, Emilia continues to consume foods that make her happy.

It wouldn’t be a big deal if she strayed from her diet. Rather than pushing oneself to compensate for those “oops” times, the approach encourages self-forgiveness. You can’t help but see benefits because it emphasizes eating healthily and paying attention to what you consume.

What is Emilia Clarke's workout routine?

Emilia’s diet is a big help in keeping her body in shape, but it’s not the only thing she does. She also exercises regularly. She doesn’t perform a lot of heavy lifting. Instead, she concentrates on doing high repetitions while only using her own body weight to maintain a toned and slim physique.

Her personal trainer is a strong supporter of bodyweight exercises and thinks that using only your own body weight can completely transform your body. This allows her to tone up and gain strength without bulking up. It also ensures that she works out while on the road.

Aside from bodyweight training in the gym, Emilia tries yoga, Pilates, and HIIT routines which are easier to squeeze in on production days. Her personal trainer advised her that the ideal exercise approach was to change her weekly routine.

Emilia Clarke is still careful with everything that she does.

The actress now avoids straining herself to the breaking point. This could be because of her two aneurysms. Yet, she still does whatever makes her happy. She goes slowly when necessary and pushes herself more when she feels capable.

Rather than focusing only on the outcomes or a number on the scale, it’s about striking a balance that supports her health. Emilia sees her exercises as a chance to feel motivated and good about herself. As her trainer says, this is how you should always handle a workout.

Although reaching a specific weight or size may be the objective, this does not mean you should push yourself to the limit. Doing so can hinder your progress, increase your chance of injury, and cause you to gain weight.
