Ne-Yo's Early Life

Ne-Yo 1

The birthplace of Shaffer Chimere Smith in Camden, Arkansas. Ne-Yo’s mother is African American, and his father is of Chinese and African American ancestry. His parents were both musicians. He was raised by his mother as a young child after his mother and father divorced. The family was then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, by his mother. (3)

Ne-Yo's Education

Smith joined the R&B group Envy while attending the Las Vegas Academy, going by the stage name GoGo. The group made appearances on an amateur night on Showtime at the Apollo and the short-lived MTV series The Cut. After the band split up in 2000, Smith continued composing Music for other artists before launching a solo career. Big D Evans, a producer who once collaborated with Ne-Yo, gave him the stage name Ne-Yo because he thought Ne-Yo viewed Music similarly to how Neo viewed the Matrix.

Ne-Yo's Wife and Family Life

Ne-Yo’s then-girlfriend Jesseca White gave birth to a boy in 2005, and she gave him the middle name Chimere. Even though Ne-Yo thought he was the father, he later realized that was not the case. Ne-Yo revealed to Ebony in June 2010 that he and his then-girlfriend Monyetta Shaw were expecting a girl in the first quarter of 2011. Madilyn Grace Smith, Shaw’s daughter, was born prematurely on November 12, 2010, in Atlanta, Georgia. Ne-Yo announced that he and Monyetta Shaw were expecting their second child in September 2011. Mason Evan Smith, a boy, was born to Shaw on October 9, 2011. The singer revealed that he and Crystal Renay Williams were engaged and expecting a child in September 2015. Their wedding day was February 20, 2016. On March 15, 2016, their son Shaffer Chimere Smith, Jr., was born. Roman Alexander-Raj Smith, their second child, was born on June 14, 2018. Ne-Yo announced in February 2020 that he and Crystal Smith would divorce and later withdrew his divorce petition.

Ne-Yo's Career

Ne-Yo 3

Ne-Yo was signed by Columbia Records after Envy broke up in 2000, but the record company fired him before he could release his already-completed debut album. The song “That Girl,” which Ne-Yo intended to release as the lead single from his then-unreleased album, was accidentally heard by American singer Marques Houston. Houston re-recorded the song for his 2003 album MH and released it as a single. Ne-Yo became known as a top songwriter after the song’s release. Ne-Yo continued to write songs over the following two years, some of which have not yet seen official release. Ne-Yo contributed vocals to the 2004 albums Complex Simplicity by American singer Teedra Moses, It is About Time by Christina Milian, and Youngstown by the American boy band, but none of those albums received much mainstream attention.

Ne-Yo’s albums were made available through Def Jam at the beginning of 2006. Ne-Yo’s album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling more than 301,000 copies in its first week of release, helped by the success of its second single, “So Sick.” The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 the same week. Later singles included “When You are Mad” and “Sexy Love,” which peaked at number 15 and 7. The Recording Industry Association of America awarded Ne-Yo the album platinum certification for a shipment of more than one million copies.

Ne-Yo and Akon worked together in March 2013 to create the single “Play Hard” by David Guetta from his 2012 album Nothing but the Beat 2.0. On Jessica Sanchez’s single “Tonight,” taken from her debut album Me, You & the Music, he also worked with her. The song and music video was made available on March 21, 2013. The song “It is All Good,” which Ne-Yo and Cher Lloyd co-wrote in April, was eventually used in Fruttare commercials. He and Celine Dion recorded “Incredible” at around the same time for Dion’s 2013 album Loved Me Back to Life. The music video for “Incredible” debuted in June 2014 after the single’s release as a single in February 2014. (4)
