At 12, Quan made his acting debut as Harrison Ford’s sidekick Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His younger brother was also selected for the auditions at Castelar Elementary School. At The Goonies panel at the 2019 Fan Expo Toronto, Sean Astin, Quan, and Corey Feldman participated. Richard “Data” Wang was a member of the titular group of kids and was portrayed by Quan in The Goonies in 1985. His character in the 1986 Taiwanese film It Takes a Thief was a pickpocket orphan. He co-starred with Honda Minako, a Japanese idol singer, in the 1987 film Passengers. In the short television series Together We Stand, he played Sam, and in the sitcom Head of the Class, he played Jasper Kwong.

He played the lead in Breathing Fire and a supporting role in Encino Man. Ke Huy portrayed the title character in the forty-episode 1993 Mandarin TV series The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter. Ke Huy also played the lead role in the 1996 Hong Kong/Vietnam co-production Red Pirate. Quan trained under Tao-Liang Tan after learning Taekwondo from Philip Tan while working on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Quan struggled to find acting work in the United States as an adult. He eventually gave up acting and enrolled in the University of Southern California’s film program. Quan was asked by Corey Yuen to travel to Toronto, Canada, after receiving his degree from USC to assist in choreographing the fighting scenes for the movie X-Men.

The success of Crazy Rich Asians encouraged Quan to resume acting. The Daniels started casting for Everything Everywhere All at Once the same year. Waymond Wang, who would play three different characters in the movie, was difficult to cast. Daniel Kwan, the co-director, ran into Quan on Twitter. Quan got a call to audition for the film two weeks after getting a talent agent. Quan received a supporting role in the Netflix movie Finding ‘Ohana’ in September 2019 after landing the role of Waymond Wang. After overhearing director, Jude Weng compares the movie to The Goonies and Indiana Jones, both of which Quan had appeared in, Quan approached her.

Although Ke Huy considered Everything Everywhere All at Once to be his acting comeback, given that it was filmed before Finding ‘Ohana, the movie marked Quan’s first provisional credit since the 2002 release of Second Time Around. Quan was introduced as a cast member of Everything Everywhere All at Once in January 2020. The movie was published in March 2022 to positive reviews and media attention, and Quan’s performance was praised. Ke Huy was announced to have joined the cast of the American Born Chinese TV adaptation for Disney+ in February 2022. (4)
