The information released on Friday by the Mexican Social Security Institute revealed that 57 pupils from the remote Bochil village displayed signs and symptoms associated with poisoning when they arrived at the nearby hospital.

The rest of the students were stable; however, one student was moved to the hospital in the state’s capital because of a “critical” situation.

Authorities did not provide details on the cause, but local media reported that some parents think the students may have consumed contaminated food or drink.

In a statement, the leaders of Bochil said, “We are outraged by these events,” and they added that they are aiding a state prosecutor’s probe.

Following rumors that pupils had tested positive for cocaine in local media, the state prosecutor’s office announced on social media on Saturday that it had undertaken 15 laboratory tests, all of which had returned negative.

One dad stated in the video that his daughter had previously been poisoned along with other students and had tested positive for cocaine at a private laboratory.

When questioned about the earlier poisoning incidents, the state prosecutor’s office stated it would continue to test students but did not provide a response.

Local media have reported two prior cases of widespread poisoning in the city of Tapachula, involving dozens of pupils, since September 23.
