Kendra Scott's Career

Kendra Scott started her business by establishing “The Hat Box.” The company developed a cozy hat style for ladies undergoing chemotherapy. She created her first collection, which cost her about $500, in the spare bedroom of her own house in 2002, the same year she launched the firm Kendra Scott LLC. (4)

Kendra’s excellent designs were chosen to be embellished in 2005’s Oscar de la Renta Spring 2006 Runway Show. In 2007, she also displayed a design at Randolph Duke’s Runway Show. However, the economic downturn compelled her to close her company in 2009. But she finally had a chance to start her business again when she received an order from the high-end department retailer Nordstrom.

In 2010, she opened her first retail shop in Austin. The retail store launched in Austin on South Congress Avenue. In the same year, she created the Color Bar experience and online store for her brand. She opened a second boutique in 2011 on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The store, however, quickly closed its doors.

Scott sold a tiny share of her business to Berkshire Partners, a private equity firm, in 2016. The investment was sold to her for $1 billion. Scott continued expanding her company by creating more retail locations. By the end of 2019, she has opened 102 retail locations.

Scott left his position as CEO of the company in February 2021. Despite this, she keeps her position as the company’s executive chairwoman. In addition to her lucrative business partnership with Kendra Scott LLC, she has also invested in a number of other companies, such as Helm Boots and Darbie Angell dinnerware.

Kendra Scott's Controversies

The Texas Handmaids

The Texas Handmaids

The local jewelry company Kendra Scott’s Domain store location has been the target of a persistent letter- and email-writing campaign by “The Texas Handmaids,” reproductive rights activists who dress in red robes in the style of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian classic. The Texas Handmaids held a fundraiser this spring at the request of the Pflugerville Pregnancy Resource Center as part of their charitable “Kendra Gives Back” program. (5)

Crisis pregnancy clinics specifically target anxious pregnant mothers in an effort to deter them from getting an abortion, as The Chronicle recently discovered. They do this by spreading false information about medicine, instilling shame, and promoting religion.

The Pflugerville CPC website’s fifth bullet point, “Facts About Abortion,” has a link to the state’s ideological and factually inaccurate “Woman’s Right to Know” brochure. There are four choices listed, including marriage and adoption, that a woman may choose from if she is pregnant and unsure.

After becoming frustrated with the company’s lack of response, the repro rights activists organized a demonstration at the Kendra Scott corporate offices for this coming Saturday, August 4. Scott was contacted for her opinion regarding their backing of the CPC. The business acknowledged its mistakes rather than stepping up its defense.

Kelly retorted that she had also communicated with the Handmaids, assuring them of Scott’s “commitment” to stop future support for these CPCs.

Lawsuit Against Competitor

Similar Logo Controversy

Kendra Scott, an Austin-based jewelry designer, filed a federal lawsuit accusing a rival of trademark infringement and breaking a prior agreement to settle the case before trial. (6)

In an American filing, Kendra Scott Inc. claims that Evereve Inc. has been utilizing a medallion-shaped emblem identical to one Kendra Scott Inc. has long used in District Court in Austin.

Evereve did not answer a message from the American-Statesman seeking comment on the complaint, a business based in Edina, Minnesota, that was once known as Hot Mama.

In court records, Kendra Scott Inc. claims that it contacted Evereve to try and settle the conflict and that an agreement was signed on January 12, 2018.

According to Kendra Scott Inc., the continuous use of the medallion by Evereve on jewelry “is likely to confuse, to cause an error and to deceive customers and potential customers.”

Kendra Scott has accused Evereve of contract violations, trademark infringement on both a state and federal level, common law unfair competition, dilution, and unjust enrichment.

The “Kendra Cares Program,” which Scott launched in 2015, allowed children at the Texas Dell Children’s Medical Center to take a break from their medical treatments by partaking in Kendra Scott’s jewelry-making program, the color bar experience. Scott then made the decision to give back to the community.

Scott also gave money and more than 75,000 pieces of jewelry to help neighborhood projects. 2019 saw her donate $1 million to The University of Texas to launch the Kendra Scott Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute.
