After their in-home Ring smart cameras were hacked, dozens of customers claim they received death threats, racial slurs, and blackmail. They are suing the corporation for “horrific” privacy violations.

An ongoing class action lawsuit claims that Ring, a company owned by Amazon, has insufficient security safeguards that let hackers take control of customers’ devices. Smart cameras from Ring, which are frequently mounted on doorbells or inside homes, offer home security.

By combining accusations from more than 30 people in 15 families who claim their devices were hacked and used to harass them, the lawsuit against Ring expands on earlier claims. 

The lawsuit claims that in response to these assaults, Ring “blamed the victims and supplied insufficient responses and bogus excuses.” The plaintiffs contend that the business failed to effectively update its security protocols in the wake of these hacks.

The families identified in the case and any other Ring users who have been hacked stand to gain from the lawsuit. Even if they weren’t hacked, the class includes tens of thousands of customers who bought a Ring doorbell between 2015 and 2019.

The lawsuit shows how hackers have taken control of Ring cameras, yelled profanities, demanded ransom payments, and threatened to kill and sexually attack people.

LeMay called Ring that day to report the theft and changed passwords immediately, but she didn’t hear back from them for nearly a week. The complaint asserts that the business failed to inform LeMay of the hack’s origin or method. Due to the emotional distress, the plaintiff ultimately had to quit her employment. (4)

Ring has not revealed who carried out the hacks, and victims claim they are still unsure who gained access to their homes via the devices.

According to the lawsuit, Ring repeatedly accused victims of not using secure enough passwords. It claims that Ring should have used two-factor authentication, which provides an additional layer of protection using a second form of identity, such as a phone number, and had customers create complex passwords when configuring the devices.

However, the lawsuit claims Ring suffered a hack in 2019 and that the stolen login information from that incident may have been used to access users’ cameras. This suggests that Ring may have been responsible for the hacks it has supposedly blamed on users. According to a spokeswoman, the business declines to comment on ongoing legal matters.

The lawsuit also refers to studies from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other organizations demonstrating how Ring’s usage of several third-party trackers on its app violates users’ privacy.

In addition to worries about hacking, Ring has come under fire for expanding its relationship with police departments in surveillance. Ring has established law enforcement partnerships in more than 1,300 cities, enabling users to send videos and photos to the police.
