Simu Liu was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China, on April 19, 1989, and raised in Mississauga, Ontario. When he was five, his parents moved to Canada. His parents, Zhenning and Zheng Liu enrolled at Beijing University to pursue engineering degrees.

While his mother worked in Beijing, Liu’s father, Zhenning, traveled to America to pursue a PhD. His grandparents reared Liu until he was five years old.

Later, his parents joined him in moving to Canada, where they supported their scholarship funds by working as dishwashers until they eventually succeeded as aerospace engineers.
