When asked about her philanthropy in one of her interviews, she answered, “I follow what’s in my heart and what I feel are urgent, important issues that deserve attention—whether it be after-school programs for underserved kids in Los Angeles, helping to restore arts and music programs in schools, encouraging people to vote, preserving the Fourth Estate so that we continue to have journalism that educates the public and holds our leaders accountable. Through my foundation, I make many small grants throughout the year, but I usually have one priority area where a majority of the grant-making is focused. Since 1984 climate change has been the focus, and in the past few years, I’ve added women’s health to that list of core priorities. In politics, I support candidates who are consistent with my values and whose policies are in line with the needs of working people as opposed to corporations.”

Barbra Streisand's home

The legendary actress, singer, and dancer Barbra Streisand has built several homes. She is also known for her artistic style and eye for architecture. One of her Malibu properties features an artificial pond with water lilies and a swimming pool. Another home is a barn-style home that Streisand plans to demolish. (7)

Barbra Streisand’s first Malibu house was a white stucco three-bedroom residence built in 1974. She purchased the property along with her boyfriend, Jon Peters. The home was simple at the time, with three small bedrooms and a large open living room.

Later, she converted the house into a Mediterranean-style villa. The building had vaulted ceilings and skylights. This home was only open to visitors by appointment.

The fourth house on the property was the former studio of the actress’s production company, Barwood. The building was later owned by Broadway composer and lyricist Jerry Herman. Now, the building is the executive office of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

In the early 1990s, Streisand put the property on the market for $19.5 million. At the time, the property was appraised at $14 million. That appraisal was worth a 6.75 tax break.
