Angela Bassett’s Early Life

Angela Bassett - 1

On August 16, 1958, Betty Jane and Daniel Benjamin Bassett welcomed Angela Evelyn into New York City, USA. Her mother was a nurse’s assistant, while her father was an electrician. She moved in with Aunt Golden, her father’s sister, at her parent’s request when she was just ten months old.

Angela Bassett and her younger sister D’nette were taken by their mother to St. Petersburg, Florida, to live with her grandparents after her parents divorced. As a youth choir member, Angela would attend church on Sundays. She enjoyed listening to the latest “Motown” singles on the radio, and her mother frequently made her and her sister dance to the tunes.

They eventually formed a dance group with the aid of a local woman. Her mother, who had slacked in high school, did not want her children to experience the same fate as her and was especially careful that they performed well in school. A participant in the “Upward Bound” program, Angela attended Boca Ciega High School.

Angela Bassett joined the chorus, theatre club, student government, and debate group, among other organizations. In 1980, she graduated from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in African-American studies. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the “Yale School of Drama” three years later. An American actress with a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, Angela Bassett, is best recognized for her performances in biographical films like “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and “The Rosa Parks Story.”

Angela Bassett began her acting career on stage under the direction of acclaimed stage director Lloyd Richards, her teacher. She acted in two plays by August Wilson, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (1984) and“Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” (1986), both performed at the Yale Repertory Theatre. She appeared in “Black Girl” by JE Franklin at “Second Stage Theatre” about the same period.

She quickly began watching TV and movies. She was initially cast, nonetheless, in stereotypically African-American female roles. Her buddy Laurence Fishburne, who also acted in the film, suggested she be considered for the position in John Singleton’s “Boyz n the Hood,” which gave her her first significant role.

In 1992, the part of “Katherine Jackson” in the miniseries “The Jacksons: An American Dream” was given to Bassett, a vast “Jackson 5” fan. She later went on to portray “Betty Shabazz” in the Malcolm X movie released that same year. She would reprise her role as “Betty Shabazz” in “Panther” in 1995.

Her major break came in 1993 when she was cast as “Tina Turner” in the biographical movie “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” After Bassett was released in the lead role, Laurence Fishburne, who had previously turned down the part of “Ike Turner” five times, took over as the character.

Bassett starred in two significant Terry McMillan book adaptations, “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” in 1998 and “Waiting to Exhale” in 1995, both of which became movies. She collaborated with Whitney Houston, one of the most prominent female performers of all time, on the former.

She had several guest appearances on television before being chosen to play “Dr. Cate Banfield” on the long-running medical drama “ER” in 2008. She continued to feature in five seasons of “American Horror Story,” and her performance was nominated for several awards.

She participated in the 2016 BBC Two miniseries “Close to the Enemy” as one of the key cast members. Two years later, she appeared in the superhero movie “Black Panther” as “Ramonda,” the title character’s mother. She returned to her role in “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). (5)
