He does slam poetry, and Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry included him in Season 6. When he won the Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry Championship and the Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Championship in 2006, people started to notice his skills nationally and worldwide.

At the age of 15 is when Watsky began writing slam poetry. He participated on the team that finished fourth in the 2005 national competition while still a teenager and won a good number of slams in the Bay Area.

Political and societal topics are incorporated into Watsky’s poetry. In 2006, after a spirited performance to a sold-out audience, Watsky compared politicians’ actions to a typical bar pick-up line and took home the night’s top prize. Also, he performed his poem “V for Virgin” in Def Poetry Jam’s Season Six, Episode Two, that year.

In an all-around entertaining performance, Watsky, a sophomore at Emerson College and a member of the San Francisco team, took home the top prize at the National Youth Poetry Slam in 2006. He was also featured in The Boston Globe in 2009; the Arts section gave his one-person performance of “Where the Magic Happens” a positive review and referred to him as a “poetry-slam star.”

Watsky created the 15-track hip-hop album “Watsky” in 2009, which yielded one popular single called Stupidass. The following year, he released the album “Guilty Pleasures,” which was produced by San Francisco musician Tobias Butler under the stage name Procrastination and featured mashups of hit songs and songs from his debut album.

Watsky delivered a comical original rap with quick delivery in a video titled “Pale kid raps fast” that he posted to YouTube on January 17, 2011. Despite being later delisted by Watsky and having its title modified to “Watsky raps fast,” the video eventually surpassed 25 million views in just two days.

One week later, he performed a significantly altered version of the rap on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The ability to rap along with the song at the same tempo was seen as a challenge on the Internet, inspiring renditions of the song by other rappers like Mac Lethal and YouTube stars like Hank Green and Bry.

Rapper Watsky rose to fame in 2011 after his “Pale kid raps fast” video went viral. His five studio albums were Cardboard Castles in 2013, Everything You Can Do in 2014, x Infinity in 2016, Complaint in 2019, and Placement in 2020.

With the help of the YouTube channel LOUD, Watsky produced a web series called Watsky’s “Making an Album,” which had nine major episodes and numerous behind-the-scenes and live films during the Nothing Like The First Time tour. In order to coincide with the release of his second album, “Cardboard Castles,” the web series was revived on March 12, 2013, with the premiere of Season 2’s first episode, Watsky’s Releasing An Album.

The album was published on March 12, 2013, through Welk Music Group, and it quickly rose to the top of the US, Canadian, and UK iTunes Hip Hop Charts, thanks in part to a Twitter campaign. After that, he embarked on his “Sloppy Seconds” tour, which was a sequel to his Nothing Like The First Time tour. (4)
