A$AP Rocky’s Early Life

ASAP Rocky 1

On October 3, 1988, A$AP Rocky was born in Harlem. He was a budding rapper who began crafting rhymes in the third grade. But life dealt him a harsh blow when his father was incarcerated for peddling drugs, and his older brother, Ricky, fell victim to a fatal gunshot at just 20 years old.

Before his untimely demise, Ricky had imparted his rap knowledge to his younger sibling. In the aftermath of his loss, the young artist was compelled to pursue music with greater enthusiasm. However, he bravely stated on MTV in November 2013, “I never got in too deep to the point where I let it get the best of me.”

Amidst a life of constant displacement, A$AP, along with his mother and sister, found themselves hopping between homeless shelters. With limited options at hand, A$AP turned to sell illicit drugs, including cannabis and crack cocaine. Though he was briefly incarcerated for his involvement in drug dealing, he remained steadfast in his passion for rap, continuing to pen lyrics even behind bars.

A$AP Rocky’s Wife/Girlfriend and Family Life

As of 2023, A$AP Rocky is dating the renowned Hollywood artist Rihanna. They’ve been together since 2020, with their relationship confirmed by PEOPLE in November 2020. They made their red carpet entrance at the Met Gala in 2021 and later announced their pregnancy with an epic photoshoot in January 2022. Their son was born in May 2022.

However, according to Cosmopolitan, Rocky, and Rihanna are having another baby last December 2022. While the news of Rocky and Rihanna having another baby is undoubtedly “happy,” there has been a baseless and wild rumor going around that Rocky cheated on Rihanna.

The rumor surfaced after Rocky was arrested in Los Angeles after returning from a vacation in Barbados with Rihanna, who was present during the arrest. However, the claim is entirely false. (3)

A$AP Rocky’s Career

A fortunate turn occurred in 2007 when A$AP became a member of the A$AP Mob Crew, a collective of musicians hailing from Harlem. His breakout moment came in early 2011 when his “Peso” single caught fire and quickly amassed a devoted following online.

Rocky’s single was soon followed by another hit, “Purple Swag,” which solidified his ascent to stardom. With his star on the rise, A$AP secured a lucrative $3 million deal with Sony, RCA Records, and Polo Grounds music, setting the stage for an illustrious career in the music industry.

In the summer of 2012, A$AP’s star continued to soar as he landed a coveted slot at the Pitchfork Music Festival. Shortly after that, he was set to make his TV debut on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” but an unfortunate arrest due to his alleged involvement in a brawl the night before forced his performance to be postponed.

Undeterred, A$AP returned on August 21 and wowed audiences with his performance of “Goldie,” gaining widespread recognition and acclaim. The following year, A$AP released his debut album, “Long. Live. A$AP,” which received rave reviews from critics and skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard 200 charts.

To celebrate the album’s success, he embarked on a 40-date national tour and earned a coveted Gold certification, having sold over 500,000 copies. Not content with dominating the music scene, A$AP also ventured into the fashion world, launching his clothing brand and collaborating with renowned avant-garde designer and close friend Raf Simons.

The year 2015, he proved to be a challenging one for A$AP when it came to his musical releases. His second studio album, “At.Long.Last.ASAP,” was leaked online by his record label RCA, prompting an earlier-than-planned release by a week. In a statement at the time, the label explained that they expedited the album’s release to counteract the leak and ensure the album was available both in stores and online.

Although the album was well-received by critics and debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, it failed to impact sales significantly and was the least successful album of his career.

Throughout his career, A$AP has forged creative partnerships with a diverse range of artists, including Tyler, the Creator, Drake, Kid Cudi, Frank Ocean, and Lana Del Ray, to name just a few. In addition to his music, he’s also made a name for himself in the movie industry, appearing in several movies such as “Dope,” “Zoolander 2,” “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” and “All Rise,” among others.

Aside from his music and other artistic endeavors, A$AP has also made a strategic investment in Klarna, a Swedish fintech company with a staggering valuation of over $31 billion as of 2021. Speaking to Forbes about his decision to invest, A$AP praised the company’s innovative approach to credit and its potential to help people improve their financial literacy.

Drawing on his upbringing in Harlem and his experiences with financial struggles, he spoke candidly about the challenges facing low-income families when managing debt and navigating complex financial systems. He described Klarna as a “layaway plan” on a global scale, offering a unique solution to these widespread issues.

A$AP has had some legal troubles in the past, including his arrest for aggravated assault in Sweden in July 2019 after a street altercation. He was held in custody until the end of the month, and his family launched the “#FreeRocky” campaign, which included reaching out to then-President Trump for help. A$AP later stated in a GQ interview that Trump made efforts to help but didn’t actually free him. (4)
