Lori Stokes was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 16, 1962, to American lawyer Jay Stokes and her mother, Louis Stokes. Her father served 15 terms in the US House of Representatives as an attorney and politician for Ohio.

At age 95, he passed away from brain and lung cancer in his Cleveland, Ohio, home. She has a brother named Chuck Stokes, a sister named Shelly Stokes, and a sister named Angie Stokes.

Her career started in 1986 when she joined WCIA-TV in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois as a medical reporter. She later worked as a weekend co-anchor. She was also a crime and street reporter for WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Then in 1992, she became a lead female anchor at ABC affiliate WJLA-TV in Washington, DC. She served there until 1996.

During her career, she covered various important events such as the Columbine High School Massacre and the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. She was awarded the George P. Foster Peabody Award for her coverage of the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001, and earned a Congressional Black Caucus Celebration of Leadership Award for her civic services.
