Selena Quintanilla's Early Life

On April 16, 1971, Selena Quintanilla-Perez was born in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena was raised in a Jehovah’s Witness family, and her singing prowess was soon recognized. Selena and her brothers would play for the diners at the Mexican restaurant her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., founded. The restaurant closed due to a recession in the 1980s, forcing the family to file for bankruptcy and vacate their house.

The Quintanilla family later relocated to Corpus Christi, where Selena was a member of her father’s band, Selena y Los Dinos. This band played at weddings and even on street corners to raise money for the family’s expenses. By this time, it was apparent that Selena would have a successful career in singing, and in the eighth grade, her father had her withdraw from school.

Selena Quintanilla's Education

She finished her elementary studies at Lake Jackson, Texas’ Oran M. Roberts Elementary School before moving to Corpus Christi, Texas’ West Oso Junior High School. At the American School, she later finished high school. (1)

Afterward, she enrolled in the Business Administration program at Pacific Western University in the United States. She was 17 when she cut her first LP single, “Selena y Los Dinos,” in 1984. She was highly enthusiastic about extracurricular activities like singing, music, acting, etc., from the very beginning of her childhood years. She was also a good speaker and a leader.

Selena Quintanilla's Husband and Family Life

According to his book, “To Selena, with Love,” Perez first met Selena in 1989 when he joined her band Selena y Los Dinos as a guitarist. A.B. is Selena’s brother. Remember, Perez was a rock guitarist, and he had the appearance to match it. Quintanilla respected Perez’s creative abilities, but Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla Sr., wasn’t sure he trusted Perez’s “image.” Abraham was concerned that his actions may damage Selena’s otherwise impeccable reputation and, consequently, her musical career. A.B. Abraham finally bowed to pressure and allowed Perez to join the band.

Despite Perez being taken because he had a girlfriend back home in San Antonio, they began working together and soon detected a growing attraction. Naturally, he revealed his affections to the rising star in Pizza Hut, and they decided to pursue an intimate relationship without her father’s knowledge.

Even though they wanted to keep the news quiet, the two got married that same year, and the media almost instantly publicized the information about their marriage. Abraham wasn’t happy about being kept in the dark but eventually agreed to take Perez.

Selena and Perez had a passionate yet imperfect marriage. In his CNN interview, Perez acknowledged that they had disagreements and had even discussed divorcing. “We were married and stayed together every day of the week. That was something that both of us had to learn how to handle. It’s not like I opposed the notion when she brought it up because, in all honesty, I was right there with her.” (2)

But before the disaster, they had settled their disagreement and discussed having a child.

Selena Quintanilla's Career

After releasing an album in the middle of the 1980s with “Selena y Los Dinos,” Selena Quintanilla first gained popularity in the Tejano community. She entered into a contract with EMI Latin Records after releasing several LPs. Selena launched her self-titled album in 1989, and it reached its highest point on the Billboard charts at position seven. As a result of her commercial success, Selena began creating commercial jingles for well-known companies like Coca-Cola. (2)

She first published “Ven Conmigo” in 1990, which featured the immensely successful song “Baila Esta Cumbia,” and then in 1992, she released “Entre a Mi Mundo,” which was her commercial breakthrough and ultimately went 10x platinum. Her popularity increased due to her success in Mexico, where Tejano musicians had previously been despised. Selena conducted a prodigious amount of touring throughout Mexico within the following time frame.

Selena launched a clothing line and two boutiques in Texas in 1994. These businesses made seven figures. She was among the highest-paid Latin musicians in the world at the time. “Amor Prohibido,” her fourth album, was released in 1994. By this time, she had done more than any other musician in history to make Tejano music popular with younger generations. By 1995, EMI Records had big plans for her to become a crossover English-language star. She also began to make her first film appearances.

Selena Quintanilla's Death

Quintanilla-Perez employed Yolanda Saldvar in 1994 to oversee Selena’s stores. Nevertheless, Yolanda needed more practical management abilities. Therefore this turned out to be a wrong business choice. It has been claimed that she mistreated and fired staff. Selena’s relatives cautioned her to use Yolanda with caution even though she didn’t seem to be alarmed by the way this woman was acting.

As Selena’s family learned that Yolanda was operating a scheme to steal money from those attempting to join Selena’s fan club, Selena’s stores started to suffer. The family then threatened to call the police unless she could show proof of her innocence. Despite this, Selena was friends with Yolanda and wouldn’t stop hanging out with her.

When Yolanda resisted giving Selena the banking information she required to pay her taxes, things eventually came to a head. Quintanilla-Perez confronted Yolanda about it at a motel. Yolanda took a revolver out of her purse when Selena pressed her for the banking information again. Yolanda shot Selena in the lower right shoulder as she attempted to flee the room.

Selena arrived at the lobby and explained what had transpired to the workers. When the police arrived, they managed to apprehend Yolanda as she tried to flee in her pickup truck. Selena bled heavily due to the gunshot wound that cut an artery. She had no pulse when she got to the hospital, so the emergency room doctor attempted to revive her. Selena underwent surgery after experiencing an irregular heartbeat. She passed away 50 minutes into the procedure. (4)
