Bernadette Stanislaus, who later became known as Bern Nadette Stanis, was born on December 22, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up as one of five siblings, she attended Erasmus Hall High School and participated in various beauty pageants. 

Among her achievements, she has crowned Miss Brooklyn and was also the first runner-up in the Miss New York state pageant. Despite being accepted into the highly-regarded Juilliard School, she decided to leave after her second year when she was cast in the television show “Good Times.”

From February 1974 until August 1979, Bern Nadette Stanis’s first character portrayal was Thelma Ann Evans in the CBS sitcom “Good Times.” After the show’s conclusion, she made guest appearances on various television programs, such as “The Cosby Show” and “What’s Happening Now!!.” 

She and her former co-star, Jimmie Walker, were featured in a radio advertisement for “AT&T,” while Stanis starred in a Nationwide Insurance commercial. Stanis has appeared in numerous promotions for the TV One network, including a special “Thelma” promotion that aired on September 19, 2009, featuring actress Anna Maria Horsford in a “Battle of the Thelmas” segment, which showcased their on-screen weddings from their respective television series (Horsford played “Thelma Frye” in Amen).
