Bill Adler was first introduced to the music industry in the autumn of 1969 when he secured a job in the record department of a university bookstore. By 1972, he had started hosting a freeform radio program on WCBN-FM, which was the student station for the University of Michigan. During the summer of 1973, he began working as the board operator at WDET-FM, a radio station based in Detroit. 

Bill occasionally filled in as a host for Kenny Cox, a renowned jazz musician who hosted a weekly show called “Kaleidophone.” In that same year, Adler commenced his role as a contributing music editor for the Ann Arbor Sun, an alternative weekly newspaper edited by the activist and poet John Sinclair and published by David Fenton. 

This position lasted for a duration of three years. A year after, Adler began writing record reviews for Down Beat magazine. In the spring of 1975, he also worked briefly as a deejay at WABX, a pioneering free-form radio station located in Detroit. (4)
