Rush Limbaugh played football as a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School. He started working in radio when he was 16 at KGMO-AM, a station in Cape Girardeau. He went by the alias Rusty Sharpe.

In 1969, he obtained his high school diploma and enrolled at Southeast Missouri State College. He failed everything and left after two semesters since he was only interested in radio.

He began his career in radio while still a senior in high school. He later relocated to Sacramento, California, in the 1980s, where he honed the politically charged satire that led to national syndication. In 1971, 20-year-old Rush Limbaugh found work as a DJ at McKeesport, Pennsylvania’s WIXZ-AM, a Top 40 station, after quitting college.
