Doja Cat's Early Life and Education

Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, also known as Doja Cat, was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 21, 1995. Her father is a South African actor, composer, and film producer; her mother is a painter. Dlamini and her mother relocated to New York City shortly after she was born.

They stayed there for five years before relocating to Oak Park, California, where Dlamini started taking tap, ballet, and jazz courses. The family later relocated back to Los Angeles, where they lived in a Hindu ashram in the mountains. Dlamini’s enthusiasm for dance began to soar during this period. She first performed Indian classical dance before transitioning to breakdancing.

Doja Cat's Education

She studied ballet, tap, and jazz dance as she grew older and eventually joined a breakdancing group that performed around the city. Doja could enroll in a performing arts school since her aunt taught her how to sing. At 16, Doja began her career as an artist after quitting high school.

In Los Angeles, California, Doja Cat attended Loyola Marymount University. Before leaving, she studied business and psychology for three years since she decided it wasn’t the correct career.

Doja Cat's Personal Life

Although Doja Cat hasn’t made her relationship status known in the media, the singer is, as far as we know, single. She once dated Johnny Utah, also known as Jawny, a musician, but their relationship ended. Several more reports about Doja Cat’s dating have surfaced, including those involving the rapper Bree Runway and the YouTuber Joji, but nothing has been confirmed.

Doja Cat's Career

Doja Cat started writing her songs when she was a teenager. In her junior year, she left high school. Using Garageband, the youngster taught herself to sing, rap, and mix her songs. She routinely posted her works to SoundCloud. She released “So High” on her account at the end of 2012. She was playing in the underground hip-hop scene in Los Angeles at the same time. (1)

After discovering her SoundCloud account, she connected with producer Jerry Powell, who introduced her to record producer Yeti Beats and invited her to record in his studio. She was introduced to Kemosabe Records, an imprint of RCA Records, through Yeti Beats. At the age of 17, she signed a contract with the label’s executive Dr. Luke, and as part of the arrangement, Roc Nation provided temporary artist management services.

“Purrr!,” her debut EP released in August 2014, with “So High” repackaged as her debut song and appearing in FOX’s Empire’s first season. Doja Cat’s rise to popularity began with this.

Due in part to a creative block, she took a four-year break before releasing “Roll with Us” in February 2018. The first song from her debut album, “Go to Town,” was released the following month, and the second single, “Candy,” was released the next month. Her debut song as a solo artist, “Candy,” made it to the Billboard Hot 100.

Doja Cat's Controversies

Doja was accused of using anti-Black language in video chats back in 2020. “Dindu Nuffin,” a song the musician wrote in 2015 that makes fun of victims of police abuse, also made a comeback. (2)

Doja later apologized for the song but insisted she had never participated in racist online chatter. In her apology video, she said, “I have never been involved in racist conversations. I’m sorry to everyone that I offended. I’m a Black woman. Half of my family is black from South Africa, and I’m very proud of where I come from.”
