The romantic film that starred them was a labor of love for both the cast and director, John Ford. However, they had to consent to shoot the Rio Grande to get the movie’s funding. Despite the difficulties, the crew managed to produce a timeless film that still holds viewers’ attention.

Sean Thornton, portrayed by Wayne, is the protagonist of “The Quiet Man,” a drama about a retired American boxer who, after leaving the sport, returns to the little Irish hamlet where he previously lived. Thornton then meets Mary Kate Danaher, played by O’Hara, and the two quickly fall in love. Yet, he must first deal with her difficult brother.

Wayne and O’Hara’s on-screen romance became more convincing under Ford’s direction, and they engaged in a number of intimate moments, such as the well-known kissing in the rain scene, which remains a fan-favorite.

In a behind-the-scenes image posted to Facebook by the official John Wayne page, the actor is seen kneeling in front of O’Hara as though to pop the question to her in a scene from the film. In the image, the actors are dressed according to their iconic roles amid a backdrop of lush, greenery and mountains.

But to some dismay, it was unfortunate to learn from fans that the proposal sequence was never included in the film’s final version. Whether the scenario actually happened or was staged for comic effect, the photograph perfectly captures the interaction between the two players.

Although it didn’t win any Oscars, “The Quiet Man” was nevertheless a colossal triumph for Wayne, earning nominations for Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Screenplay, Art Direction, and Sound, in addition to winning two Oscars for Best Director and Cinematography.

Not only that but “The Quiet Man” was also included by the Library of Congress in the United States National Film Registry due to its cultural importance. The movie indeed demonstrated Wayne’s acting talents outside the Western and military genres for which he was well recognized.

Meanwhile, Wayne and O’Hara worked together once more on “McLintock!” as a result of their incomparable connection and added a comedic edge to their partnership. The movie was a Western comedy that continues to be favored by viewers around.

Wayne’s portrayal in “The Quiet Man” continues to be a fan favorite, despite not getting any acting accolades. The behind-the-scenes image of him proposing to O’Hara serves as a reminder of the eternal romance in the movie.
