On February 20, 1942, Addison Mitchell McConnell III was born in Sheffield, Alabama. McConnell wasn’t only born into money, but he is the great-grandson of a Confederate soldier and the son of a WWII veteran who later worked for DuPont. McConnell began his political career as a Capitol Hill intern for Sen. He presided over Jefferson County, Kentucky, as judge-executive from 1978 until January 1985, when he started his first term as a senator.
Before being elected to the US Senate in 1984, he held several posts in Kentucky and Washington. Since then, he has held both the Kentucky senatorial and Republican senatorial leadership records for the longest tenures. He rose to the position of Senate Majority Leader in 2015 after serving in party leadership for years and almost ten years as the Minority Leader.
He became famous in recent years by using his political savvy and knowledge of Senate procedures to assert his party’s authority on issues ranging from judicial nominations to legislation filibusters, from policy standoffs with President Obama to collaboration with President Trump, particularly on the approval of federal judicial nominations.
In 2016, he opposed President Obama’s Supreme Court appointment using changed Senate procedures created by former Majority Leader Harry Reid. The Senate never considered Merrick Garland’s nomination because McConnell believed he could keep the position open until Donald Trump was elected, guaranteeing a Republican nominee. McConnell stirred tremendous uproar when he declined to put Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland up for a vote in the Senate in 2016. According to a new tax return that CREW obtained, One Nation, the dark money organization led by Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) Senate Republican Leader and close associates, raised more than $172 million in 2020. (4) The enormous amount, more than $100 million than the nonprofit’s previous-year fundraising total, was boosted by multiple eight-figure donations from anonymous contributors, including one who contributed $33 million and one who gave $13.5 million.
The nonprofit organization spent over $195 million in 2020, including $77.4 million it claimed was devoted to politics. It is permitted to spend money to influence elections but is not allowed to make politics its primary business.
One Nation only engaged in openly political action when it donated to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC run by Steven Law, a former chief of staff to Mitch McConnell. During the 2020 election campaign, the super PAC raised and spent more than $475 million.
