Many fans took to social media to express their frustration and disappointment with the show’s creator.
The much-awaited fifth season of the popular television show “Yellowstone” began with a double-episode debut that left viewers in disbelief due to an unexpected storyline twist. The first episode, “One Hundred Years Is Nothing,” sent viewers on a rollercoaster of emotions as a horrible incident took place.
On her way to the hospital, Monica Dutton, portrayed by Kelsey Asbille, who was significantly pregnant with the child she and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) were having, was involved in a terrifying vehicle accident.
After the episode aired, social media erupted with fan comments, but Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the series, probably wasn’t prepared for the response. Fans didn’t take long to air their complaints and express disgust with how the sad incident played out.
Due to a considerable time leap from the previous season, the thrilling “Yellowstone” season opener occurred just three weeks before Monica’s due date. Kayce, who worked as the Livestock Commissioner close to the Canadian border, reassured her that an ambulance would meet her on the way to the hospital in Billings.
At the same time, she suffered excruciating cramps at home with her son Tate played by Brecken Merrill. With Tate riding along, Monica made the decision to drive herself to the hospital, trusting Kayce’s assurance that she would be there to help.
However, as her discomfort worsened, she found herself stumbling along a dark, two-lane Montana highway while trying to maintain control of the car. Her journey was further complicated by an approaching pickup vehicle and a large wild buffalo.
Tragically, the couple’s unborn baby, whom they had named John, was killed in the subsequent vehicle accident. Many fans were in tears at the heartbreaking scene, but some expressed their displeasure with the surprise plot twist on social media by criticizing Sheridan personally.
These viewers wished Monica’s character to die, therefore effectively ending the show, rather than the infant passing away. One fan wrote, “How much better of a storyline would it have been if Monica were killed in the accident, not baby John? I am so sick of her stupid behavior whining and victim mentality her stupidity nearly killed Tate also #Yellowstone.”
This sentiment was echoed by another fan who replied, “Couldn’t agree with you more!!! I would have loved to see her go and the baby still be delivered.”
Following the Season 5 debut, “Yellowstone” was a long-running trend on Twitter, with Monica’s persona serving as the main topic of conversation. Since the first season, many fans have voiced their dissatisfaction with the character and haven’t held back.
Just like this other fan who wrote, “#Yellowstone really made it their priority to make Monica the stupidest character on the show. Bih been making the dumbest decisions since S1E1 smfh.”
The fans’ heated response demonstrates how emotionally invested and devoted of a fanbase “Yellowstone” has amassed over the years. It remains to be seen how these incidents and the resulting fan response will affect the show’s future course as the season progresses.
