On August 29, an incident at Interstate 94 in Minneapolis led to the shooting of Luis Damian Martinez, 38, in the chest. The suspect, George Howard, 47, fled the scene leaving the victim to die. According to KSTP, he has two counts of second-degree murder on his record.
Hence, many were stunned when they learned Howard had already been freed of domestic assault charges, as reported by Fox News on August 6. The suspect was bailed out with $11,500 from the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris promoted last year.
Back in June 2020, Harris tweeted for the promotion of MFF, saying, “If you’re able to, chip in now to the @MNFreedomFund to help post bail for those protesting on the ground in Minnesota.”

On a deleted tweet, the organization admits they had taken part in Howard’s bailing. “We are aware of reports of the tragic and fatal shooting in Minneapolis earlier this week allegedly involving George Howard, an individual the Minnesota Freedom Fund had previously provided with bail support,” MFF tweeted.
Despite being aware of the shooting incident, the organization continued to defend their decision: “MFF believes that every individual who has been arrested by the law enforcement is innocent until proven guilty, and if a judge deems them eligible for bail, they should not have to wait in jail simply because they don’t have the same income or access to resources as others.”
MFF also deleted another tweet, claiming they had “implemented changes” to its policies and procedures. Further, they assured transparency on the case on a tweet Friday.
“MFF is closely monitoring developments in the case and will share more information as additional facts become known,” the group declared.
