Roger Jenkins' Early Life

Roger Jenkins was born in England in the United Kingdom on September 30, 1955.  His father, Arthur, was described by Jake Young, one of the Jenkins Boys’ PE teachers at the Edinburgh Academy as a very successful man who worked as an oil refinery manager while their mom, Vera was more on the intellectual side.

Vera and Arthur Jenkins were determined in making their three children succeed in life. They raised them to be driven and to always strive for greatness. All of their three children both excelled in school and in sports.

Roger Jenkins was the middle child. He had an older brother named David and a younger brother named Trevor. During their younger days, the trio would join various sports in school. Roger was more drawn to rugby while in school his older brother David was more concentrated on athletics. His brother David, was a Chemical Engineering graduate just like their father. When it comes to the youngest of the Jenkins boys, there is not much known about him.

In 1972, David Jenkins represented Scotland in the 1972 Munich  Olympics where he won a silver medal as an international sprinter. However, he left the sports following the controversies being thrown at him. He allegedly played a role in a steroid-muggling ring, which earned him a prison sentence.

Roger Jenkins' Education

All of the three Jenkins Boys attended the Edinburgh Academy. Roger Jenkins played rugby while studying at Edinburgh Academy. After graduating from the school, he went on to pursue higher education at Heriot-Watt University, a public university in Edinburgh, Scotland. He took up economics in the said university, a course which his father did not approve of since he wanted his sons to be chemical engineers like him. He then became an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB) and received his Diploma in Financial Studies from the Institute.

Roger Jenkins' Relationships and Family Life

Roger Jenkins’ most famous ex-wife may be Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Sanela Diana Jenkins, but did you know that Roger Jenkins had other exes besides her?

His first wife was Catherine McDowell, a fellow employee Barclays banker. The two of them met when they were still trainees in 1978. When the couple’s marriage fell apart, he met another woman that would surely make a mark in his life.

He met his second wife, Sanela Diana at the Barbican Gym. She was a very charming woman, who spoke only a little English. Sanela was a Bosnian refugee, a woman whose life was riddled with tragedy.

During this time, Robert Jenkins wasn’t as well off as he is now. He was just divorced and was living in a rented apartment alone. Roger Jenkins was Sanela Diana’s first friend in England, and they grew really close to each other. Their friendship quickly blossomed into love and so in 1999, they wed at Chelsea Register Office.

The couple was blessed with two kids Eneya Jenkins and Innis Jenkins.

As their relationship progressed, so did Roger’s career. Roger Jenkins became a very successful banker and has slowly risen in the investment banking ladder and he has claimed that Sanela Diana was a big part of it. According to him, Sanela Diana complemented his lack of ‘social skills’. Sanela Diana was outgoing and was constantly making headlines for her charity works and fundraising parties. It was her social skills that led the Qatari royal family to invest 4 Billion Pounds to Barclays during the credit crunch, which saved the company and its employees.

The couple’s marriage eventually resulted in divorce after ten years of being with each other. They divorced amicably in 2011. After their divorce, Roger Jenkins had insisted to give Sanela Diana half of all his wealth.

“Diana and I had a wonderful marriage. Without her, I would not have had anything like the success I have had. We built our fortune together from scratch so why shouldn’t she get half,” Roger Jenkins remarked.

After their divorce, Roger Jenkins has dated a few famous people such as supermodel Elle Macpherson, beauty queen Aida Yespica.

In 2018, he married Brazilian model Larissa Andrade. However, their marriage was only for a brief time cause in 2021, they divorced.

After his graduation, he joined Barclays as a trainee in 1978. Later on, he got the job as the head of the private placements at the company’s Barclay’s Investment Banking division, Barclays de Zoete Wedd (BZW), in New York City. However, he left the job to work for Kleinwort Benson, where he was a Director and Co-Head of Financial Markets. He stayed n the company for seven years.

In 1994, he rejoined Barclays to set up a group advising companies on tax and regulatory management. While at Barclay, he developed an expertise in structuring and analyzing the tax regimes of various countries. The group he formed was later on called Barclay’s Capital Structured Capital Markets.

In 2006, The Wall Street Journal had published an investigation alleging that in 2003, Jenkins and his team had set up a company co-owned by Barclays and the US bank Wachovia, Augustus Funding LLC, which was incorporated in Delaware but also had a London address and British directors. According to the report, the company had no employees, products, or customers but had a registered profit of $317 Million from assets such as Danish mortgage securities and U.S. Treasuries, on which it paid UK taxes of $94 Million. The report suggested that Augustus Funding was one of at least nine structures involving US banks set up by Barclays.

Roger Jenkins was the chairman of Barclays’ Middle Eastern business when he left the company to start his own firm. He used his contact in the Persian Gulf to launch his advisory firm in Dublin called Elkstone Capital.

In 2020, financier Amanda Staveley filed a case against Barclays after her client, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, invested 3.25 Billion as part of emergency fundraising. PCP Capital Partners, the investment company run by Staveley, claims that Barclays made a secret side deal with the Qatari investors causing PCP to lose out on much higher than 30 Million pounds it actually received. During this time, Jenkins was one of the executives of Barclays so he was also charged but was acquitted of fraud charges.
