Bernt was visiting family in Lofoten when they met as teenagers. When she was 23 and he was 25, they married in July 1978. Following their wedding, they relocated to the United States in 1978. Elisabeth became pregnant soon after, and their eldest son, Thomas “Tom” Bodal, was born in April 1979. Alexander Olav Bodal and Ellen Bodal were the couple’s other children (born 1981). Alex is a Berklee College of Music graduate with a degree in music. Ellen previously worked for American Seafoods and is now employed by Amazon.com. Tom is a Seattle-based professional chef.
