He is also the director of other renowned films such as Stuart Little, Stuart Little 2, The Haunted Mansion, The Forbidden Kingdom, and Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

Robert Minkoff was born in Palo Alto, California on August 11, 1962, to Jack Robert Minkoff and Tola Fay Minkoff. He was raised in a Jewish household, it was in his early childhood days that he would find his love for film and animation which will eventually blossom into what he is most notable for now. 

Robert Minkoff's Education

Robert Minkoff attended Palo Alto High School in California. After graduating, he studied at the California Institute of the Arts where he took up Character Animation. He graduated in the early 1980s. 

Robert Minkoff's Wife and Family Life

Robert Minkoff is married to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Crystal Kung-Minkoff. The couple married in 2007 and are blessed with two children, Zoe and Max. The American filmmaker met his wife during an office party. 

“That’s the director of Lion King…maybe he’ll hire you,” was the statement that lead to their marriage. This was the statement Crystal, and this prompted her to approach him, with hopes of a job opportunity. However, she never got the offer, instead, she got a commitment that would last a lifetime. 

Robert Minkoff's Career

Robert Minkoff was still a student when he got a job offer from Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1983. His job was as an in-between artist for the Black Cauldron. Afterwards he became the supervising animator for The Great Mouse Detective and then eventually he was made the character designer for The Brave Little Toaster.  He also was the character animator for The Little Mermaid and the director for two Roger Rabbit short films Tummy Troubler and Roller Coaster Rabbit. Robert was also a part of the pre-production and self-development of Beauty and the Beast. 

The major break in Robert Minkoff’s career was when he co-directed the Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film The Lion King alongside Roger Allers. Because of this, he was offered various projects such as Stuart Little, which was his first live-action movie, and then Stuart Little 2, a mix of live-action and computer animation. 

In 2003, he directed a full live-action movie, The Haunted Mansion and then The Forbidden Kingdom and Flypaper, just after five and eight years respectively. 

Robert Minkodd also has other notable works such as DreamWorks Animation’s computer-animated film Mr. Peabody & Sherman. He also has other movies such as Chinese Odyssey, Blazing Samurai,  and Blazing Saddles. In 2018, he served as the director of the original Netflix animated series Llama Llama.
