Sweat began his musical career in 1975 as a member of the Harlem band Jamilah. Sweat was able to develop his craft as a lead singer with the guidance of Jamilah by playing regionally throughout the tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Bassist Larry Peoples, guitarist Michael Samuels, and drummer Walter Bradley formed the band.

He began a solo career after leaving the group in 1984, singing at nightclubs across New York City and landing a recording contract with the independent label Stadium Records.

Sweat only recorded two songs for Stadium, “Lucky Seven” and “My Mind Is Made Up,” which were their third and fourth albums, respectively, but he is recognized as co-writer and co-producer of “You Are the One for Me,” the group’s final recording. Keith “Sabu” Crier, his uncle, is a founding member of GQ. Vincent Davis discovered Keith Sweat later that year and offered him a recording contract with his label, Vintertainment Records, which was created in 1983 on the foundations of early Hip-Hop and is best known for releasing Joeski Love’s “Pee Wee’s Dance” in 1985.

Sweat returned to the Billboard 200 chart with his second album, I’ll Give All My Love to You (1990), which reached No. 6. Keep It Comin’, his third album, was released in 1991 and debuted in the Top 20 of the album chart. Omar Chandler, a soul singer, was produced by him. Sweat discovered Silk in 1992 and assisted in the creation of their debut album, Lose Control, which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 album list.
