Meet George Dario Marino Franchitti, a Scottish native born in Bathgate, West Lothian, on May 19, 1973. His family, who hails from Italian descent, also originated in Scotland. When Dario was eight years old, they relocated to Whitburn, and he eventually attended Stewart’s Melville College, where he discovered his passion for karting. 

In the early 1990s, Dario Franchitti started his racing career in Great Britain. In his early racing career, Dario Franchitti was no stranger to victories, having clinched the Karting Scottish Junior Championship in 1984, the British Junior Championships in 1985 and 1986, and the Scottish senior title in 1988. 

In 1991, he jumped to Formula Vauxhall Junior and quickly made a name for himself, securing the championship with four impressive wins. The following year, he moved up to Formula Vauxhall Lotus. He teamed up with Paul Steward Racing, finishing fourth place in his debut season and earning himself the coveted McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year award. 

Dario continued to ascend in the racing world and competed in the British Formula 3 Championship in 1994, where he clinched a win and finished fourth overall in his first year. However, despite his successes, he was not retained for the 1995 season, marking the end of his single-seater racing days in Europe.

As of 2023, the retired racing driver is married to his wife, Eleanor Robb, an Englishwoman, and together, they share two daughters named Sofia and Valentina. Following Dario’s tragic accident in 2013, the couple’s relationship blossomed, and they began dating. 

After spending several years together, they decided to get married in 2015. Their wedding ceremony was modest, attended by only their closest family and friends. Together, they share the joy of parenthood with their two beautiful daughters, Sofia and Valentina Franchitti. 

Before marrying Eleanor Robb, Dario Franchitti had relationships with several other individuals, including American actress Ashley Judd, whom he married in 2001. However, their marriage ended after 11 years, and they got divorced in 2013. The couple did not have any children together. (3)

Dario Franchitti set his sights on the United States in 1997, signing on with Hogan Racing and making his debut in the prestigious CART Championship Series. However, tragedy struck in 1999 when he lost his dear friend Greg Moore to a fatal crash in the season’s final race at California Speedway. Dario’s own fortunes took a hit in 2000 after a major crash during pre-season testing, which severely impacted his season.

Despite these setbacks, he managed to clinch a win in 2001 at Cleveland. Still, it wasn’t until his Vancouver Molson Indy victory in 2002 that he found solace, dedicating the win to his fallen friend who hailed from nearby Maple Ridge, British Columbia.

Dario Franchitti made the leap to the IndyCar series in 2003, but it wasn’t until 2007 that he achieved great success. That year, he clinched victory at the Indianapolis 500, despite the race being shortened due to rain. His outstanding performance earned him the title of BBC Scotland’s Sports Personality of the Year. 

Dario later tried his hand at NASCAR, but it proved to be a challenging endeavor, prompting him to return to IndyCar racing. Despite this setback, he continued to achieve more success, but in 2013, he was involved in a severe accident in Houston that forced him to retire due to his injuries. Throughout his illustrious career, Dario racked up an impressive 31 victories. (4)

Recently, Dario posted a photo of him, Dr. Terry Trammell, and Dr. Steve Olvey at the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. He stated in the post that he was honored to induct the two respectable personalities at the abovementioned event.

Dario mentioned that Dr. Terry Trammell, and Dr. Steve, who are involved in safety operations in the IndyCar series, have rescued and safeguarded numerous drivers throughout the years. Their efforts have greatly enhanced safety standards across all motorsports. It’s safe to say that without their interventions, the lives of many drivers would have taken a different turn.
