Brendan Kavanagh’s Early Life

Brendan Kavanagh

Brendan Kavanagh, born in 1967 in London, England, had parents of Irish descent. His father hailed from County Cork and worked as a plasterer. Despite his family’s background in construction, Brendan never aspired to work in the same field.

From an early age, he showed an interest in music, specifically toy pianos, and even attempted to write music notations such as quavers, semiquavers, and treble clefs as a child. In addition, Brendan Kavanagh was an introverted child who enjoyed spending his time reading books alone rather than playing sports like football in the park.

When Brendan was seven years old, his father relocated to the family’s residence and brought along a piano that he had discovered abandoned on a building site. The instrument was almost a century old and proved difficult for Brendan’s father to carry up four flights of stairs to their modest two-bedroom apartment.

With the acquisition of the piano, Brendan Kavanagh began formal instruction with a local teacher, where he learned the instrument’s inner workings and how to read sheet music.

Brendan Kavanagh’s Education

Brendan Kavanagh embarked on his educational journey at a nearby school in his hometown, where he displayed exceptional academic prowess. Despite his enthusiasm for the piano, he demonstrated an early inclination toward scholarly pursuits. Subsequently, in 1986, he enrolled at St. Aloysius College to continue his educational objectives.

In 1994, Brendan Kavanagh enrolled in Middlesex University, where the pianist pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in English literature. He subsequently completed his Master of Arts in Anglo-Irish Studies at University College Dublin.

However, Brendan’s thirst for knowledge was far from quenched, and he embarked on a quest to obtain a Ph.D. in English Literature. To achieve this, he enrolled at University College Cork. (3)

As per Brendan Kavanagh’s Facebook account, he married on July 10, 2010, but has not disclosed any information about his wife or girlfriend. There is no evidence of anyone being seen with him who could be considered his partner.

Despite this, some people speculate that Brendan is married and has a daughter named Zoe Kavanagh. Brendan is an animal lover and has been breeding a dog named Rex for many years. As of January 9, 2021, Rex turned one year old.

Brendan Kavanagh’s Career

Brendan Kavanagh received comprehensive piano instruction from the illustrious international concert pianist Nelly Ben-Or. Ms. Ben-Or served as a professor of piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the United Kingdom. Brendan attributes his success in piano to her mentorship, and she has been a driving force in his career.

Brendan once humorously remarked that Ms. Ben-Or did not mind him playing a few bars of boogie-woogie on her Steinway piano. At the age of sixteen, Brendan Kavanagh became acquainted with boogie-woogie music after watching Jools Holland perform the genre on the television show “The Tube” on Channel 4.

After this, he played in several bands in London, and soon after, he met Hammy Howell, a renowned boogie-woogie player. Howell then gave Brendan four lessons on boogie-woogie music at various locations. In addition to his boogie-woogie lessons, Hammy Howell also taught Brendan his own composition called “Hammy’s Boogie,” which Dr. K later included in his Badass Boogie Bundles.

Initially, Brendan started his career as an English and Latin teacher, but after a few years, he became disenchanted with the profession and decided to leave it behind. He went on to write a book called “Toxic Teaching” that expresses his discontent with modern education. This book can still be purchased on Amazon.

Brendan Kavanagh established Dr. K Media Limited in 2007, an online piano platform with a focus on teaching, selling, performing, and promoting piano music, particularly in the boogie-woogie style. He also began performing in public spaces, including railway stations, airports, and markets, mostly within London but occasionally outside the city as well.

Brendan Kavanagh gained considerable popularity through his live performances at various locations, prompting him to establish a presence on YouTube. On June 4, 2012, he launched his self-titled YouTube channel, featuring instructional piano videos as well as recordings of his public performances.

These performances were frequently captured in bustling settings such as railway stations, airports, and markets, primarily within London and occasionally beyond.

Brendan Kavanagh’s YouTube channel reached the milestone of one million subscribers in December 2019, resulting in his receiving the Gold creator award. His channel now boasts over 1.4 million subscribers and features over 1.4k videos. Impressively, his videos have been viewed by more than 600 million individuals. (4)
