Just below the shoulder, a fourteen-foot tiger shark bit off Hamilton’s left arm.
Fishermen and divers promptly searched for the arm, but it was not discovered. About a mile from the scene of the assault, in early January 2004, a family of fishermen led by Ralph Young caught and killed a tiger shark. After slicing it apart, Hamilton’s arm was discovered in the shark’s stomach. After being brought there, it was reattached to her body at Wilcox Hospital in Kauai.

Bethany Hamilton’s Controversies
Bethany Hamilton, a world-class surfer, has promised not to participate in any upcoming World Surf League championship competitions if the league implements its new transgender athlete policy. Her remarks sparked a heated discussion among surfers, prompting Hamilton to clarify them in a subsequent post.
The International Surfing Association recently enacted a rule requiring transgender athletes to maintain a specific amount of testosterone to compete in the women’s category. The WSL’s new rule would be similar to that rule.
The new restriction “concerns” Hamilton, a devout Christian, and she would prefer to see a new division established in which transgender surfers may participate independently.
Transgender athletes have recently caused controversy in several sports, and several states are considering passing legislation to forbid them from competing in their preferred gender.
