Goodman was at Monaco’s 2023 Monte-Carlo Television Festival, showcasing his new slimmer look on the red carpet. In pictures from the event, he appeared stylish in a navy blue double-breasted suit and khaki pants. He added flair to his ensemble with a yellow tie, brown loafers, and round-framed sunglasses.

The actor’s impressive transformation results from over a decade of dedicated effort, beginning his health journey in 2007. His sustained commitment to a healthier lifestyle exemplifies how long-term dedication and hard work can yield positive and lasting results in well-being.

In a June 2023 Rolling Stone interview, Goodman revealed a significant achievement in his health journey, having lost an impressive 200 pounds since openly discussing with David Letterman in 2011 that he was at his heaviest, “pushing 400” pounds.

“I’d get off of Roseanne every spring. I’d lose 60 pounds every spring [but] I’d gain it back and then some, every year,” the actor revealed.

 

When Did John Goodman Start Losing Weight?

At the beginning of his journey, Goodman enlisted the help of health coach Mackie Shilstone. Together, they focused on cutting sugar and establishing a workout routine six days a week. Acknowledging his past struggles with alcoholism, the actor took a significant step toward his well-being by quitting alcohol after undergoing rehabilitation in 2007.

“It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your a** and figure out what you’re going to eat next,” Goodman told PEOPLE in 2010. “I wanted to live life better.”

Five years later, Goodman’s health coach shared with the New York Post that the Roseanne star had successfully shed 100 pounds, thanks to a mix of diet and exercise. The actor proudly revealed this impressive weight loss transformation at the premiere of his film “Trumbo” in 2015.

“This didn’t happen overnight – it’s been an ongoing process,” Shilstone explained to the Post. He introduced Goodman to a Mediterranean-style diet, emphasizing a diet rich in fish, nuts, olive oil, vegetables, and fruit.

The actor achieved 10,000 to 12,000 steps daily and spent time on the elliptical bicycle and treadmill. His remarkable 100-pound weight loss at that time took approximately two years.

 

The Story Behind John Goodman’s Weight Loss

In an ABC News interview, Goodman shared that he decided to change his habits when he reached a point of dissatisfaction with his reflection in the mirror.

He said, “I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror, and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.” Goodman also mentioned that his weight loss journey became simpler when he decided to “just stop eating all the time.”

I’d have a handful of food, and it’d go to my mouth,” he said. “In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack of Bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits.”

This time, Goodman aimed for a gradual approach, focusing on moving and exercising. He acknowledged that he can’t afford to remain sedentary at his age, and staying active provides him with the energy needed for work, considering it can be quite draining.

Goodman is actively managing his health journey while juggling multiple television roles. He continues to portray the beloved father, Dan Conner, in ABC’s “The Conners” and takes on the part of televangelist patriarch Eli Gemstone in the HBO comedy “The Righteous Gemstones.”

In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Goodman explained that he stays active by “getting out and walking the dogs” despite his hectic schedule. Additionally, before producing “The Conners” in 2018, he devoted much time to boxing.

“I was boxing up until then, and I haven’t been able to do that since Covid because I’m lazy,” Goodman revealed. “I haven’t been exercising, but I’m going to start a routine again this summer where I can get some stuff done. I’ve just let everything go just because I haven’t had the energy because of the jobs.”

He also shared insights into his previous challenges with alcohol and acknowledged dealing with “anger as a younger man,” attributing it to being “fueled by fear.”

“But I was probably born an alcoholic,” he joked. “But most of the anger’s gone. If I don’t watch the news, I’m cool.”
