Chaz Bono’s Weight Loss Journey

Chaz struggled with yo-yo dieting for years and attempted a celebrity weight loss show without success. It wasn’t until he embraced his true identity as transgender that he finally felt a genuine connection with his body, enabling him to adopt healthier habits.

Chaz began his journey to transition from female to male at 13. During his time in New York, he initially confused his gender identity with his sexuality. Despite being attracted to women and having relationships with them, his understanding of himself evolved.

The challenge of feeling like he was born in the wrong body significantly impacted Chaz’s physical well-being. Before and during his transition, he engaged in excessive video gaming and drinking, faced drug addiction, and smoked. Additionally, he grappled with fluctuations in weight.

Chaz explains that being transgender his entire life left him feeling disconnected from his own body. It was only when he completed his transition from female to male that he began to actively manage his health and embark on a weight loss journey.

In 2005, Chaz joined Celebrity Fit Club to lose weight, and while he saw results, they didn’t last. He attributes this mainly to cravings, the high standards instilled by his mother during childhood, and hormonal changes during his transition in 2008.

Chaz successfully shed weight by sticking to traditional methods—eating healthily and exercising.

 

Chaz Bono’s Workout Routine

Chaz loved his time on “Dancing With the Stars” so much that he continues to attend dance classes to stay active and lose weight. At the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, he mentioned that he still enjoys dancing and takes classes, highlighting ballroom as his preferred form of exercise.

Because dancing is enjoyable, individuals are likelier to stick to it as a form of exercise. The calories burned vary based on the type of dance, as different styles target different muscles and movements.

High-energy hip-hop and swing dance can burn over 550 calories per hour thanks to their intense cardio movements. On the other hand, slower dances like ballroom dancing typically burn around 300 calories per hour.

Chaz also incorporates a mix of martial arts and kickboxing into his routine. These enjoyable physical activities make it easier for him to commit time to them every week.

Cardio kickboxing is a calorie-burning powerhouse, helping you torch between 350 and 450 calories per hour. Beyond its physical benefits, it also offers mental advantages. Engaging in vigorous exercises is an excellent way for the body to release stress and mental frustration.

The calories burned in a martial arts class depend on the pace of the practice. Slower-paced martial arts can burn between 475 and 575 calories per hour, while more moderately-paced martial arts can crank up to 900 calories.
