The fifth season was announced in February 2018 and premiered on April 5, 2018. For season five, Chelsea Meissner has been elevated to the main cast, replacing Clements. To use the descriptor “boring” to describe Chelsea in general is an exaggeration. In terms of Southern Charm, though, it makes more sense. In this situation, that’s a good thing.

Ashley’s tearing through this buddy group, yelling at and shaming Kathryn, pressuring Thomas into marriage, flirting with all the other men in a comical or not so humorous fashion – none of it was as captivating to me as it was to the majority of other viewers. Even if it kept everyone on their toes, both involved and watching at home, I see why it’s compelling television. The core of it was so filthy, and most of it was cruel and pointless. (8)

Chelsea was the perfect foil for all of that upheaval throughout the same season. While her efforts to be kind to Ashley, speak to her in a calm tone, and reason with her when she was unhappy were not totally successful, the action was classy and a righteous endeavor to keep the peace. (8)

She had little issue becoming the bigger person when she took her buddy and Austen Kroll‘s at-the-time girlfriend, Victoria, aside during Austen’s beer tasting to work through their semi-love triangle. Chelsea was partially responsible for one of the season’s less dramatic moments, concealing her face in Austen’s arm on a chilly boat ride, and while I wouldn’t appreciate it if I were Victoria, I believe Chelsea and Austen when they say it was nothing. Chelsea gives the idea that being in close quarters with someone with whom she needs to have an embarrassing conversation is significantly more difficult for her than bringing up the subject in person. Chelsea appears to be a bit of an oddity in this cast on paper. Sure, she has a proclivity for rapidly resolving conflicts, but she also stands out from the rest of the group because she works. Few people are working or even require jobs, which provides as a welcome diversion from the rest of the drama. Oh, and she isn’t actually Miss Innocent here. She was in another love triangle with Shep and Austen the previous season, and the one with Austen and Victoria that season was murkier but still prominent. And she kicked out the season with some surprising and somewhat obnoxious remarks about Austen’s drive levels, which he didn’t enjoy. Chelsea, like any woman, enjoys talking trash (and, as we’ve recently discovered, about crap), but not in a way that disrupts the group. (7)

Chelsea’s bond with her family, her journey to her childhood home, and in general, bringing friends and viewers into her life, beyond that hard shell of an exterior, for a closer look at who she is, were some of the softer and more heartbreaking moments of season 5. It was just as endearing and endearing to watch her cry over her foul tongue as it was to watch her giggle. (6)

Ashley served a clear function that season, whilst Chelsea served a less clear purpose. She chose to show the world what she wanted the world to see about her life, personality, and friendships when the program seemed to be falling apart. Oh, and she did it all while remaining composed and (for the most part) courteous to everyone around her. Not everyone can say the same of themselves throughout that season (okay, Shep can). Chelsea’s performance this year wasn’t extraordinary, but it was well-balanced, keeping things personal and relevant throughout. As viewers, we needed something to stay invested in these people and their lives — you know, the ones worth watching and pulling for. (8)
