Thomas Ravenel's Early Life
Thomas Ravenel is a politician who served as the state treasurer in the past. He was born on August11, 1962. He is the son of the late Arthur Ravenel, Jr., who served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He was conceived and brought up in the state of South Carolina. In recognition of his father’s contributions to the city of Charleston, a bridge has been named in his honor.
In his campaign for the state senate in 1996, Arthur made it a central plank to advocate for the replacement of the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge and the Silas N. Pearman Bridge with a brand new bridge that would connect Charleston and Mount Pleasant in South Carolina. In the end, the bridge (which can be seen in the image to the right) was dedicated in July of 2005 and given Arthur’s name. In 1994, his father likewise made an attempt to get the candidacy for governor of the Republican Party in South Carolina.
According to an interview that Arthur gave to Mount Pleasant Magazine, Thomas’ family genealogy can even be traced back to the French Huguenots who came in what was then known as Charles Town in 1686. It is not surprising that he makes use of his French talents whenever he has the opportunity to do so on Southern Charm. He was the youngest of six children.
After the divorce of his parents and the departure of his siblings, Ravenel was forced to spend a significant portion of his boyhood on his own. In spite of the fact that he seems to have a healthy relationship with his father at the present time, it comes out that Ravenel did not spend a great deal of time with Arthur after the breakup of his parents’ marriage.
When the businessman was ten years old, his parents went their separate ways, which resulted in the rest of the family going in different directions. During an interview on Quintin’s Close-Ups that took place in March 2013, Ravenel said that his mother, Louise Rodgers, had begun a new business that required her to spend a lot of time away from the house. At the same time, four of Ravenel’s siblings either got married or went to college. In addition to that, Ravenel’s older brother William, who suffers from Down syndrome, was placed in a facility for individuals with similar conditions.
Thomas Ravenel's Education
Thomas Ravenel joined the Citadel’s Corps of Cadets in 1981 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the institution five years later in 1985. After completing his education, he went on to work in the real estate industry for a considerable amount of time. In 1991, he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Master of Business Administration degree, with additional training in the areas of finance and real estate.
Thomas Ravenel's Girlfriend and Family Life
At the moment, Thomas Ravenel is not in a committed relationship with anyone. Thomas Ravenel’s son is almost a year old, and the child’s mother is Heather Mascoe, who was Thomas Ravenel’s ex-fiancée and the star of Southern Charm. After Heather had given birth to their first child together the previous summer, the couple came clean about their relationship status. The news came as a surprise to everyone because no one was even aware that Thomas was involved with anyone else prior to hearing it. Kathryn Dennis, his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his first two children, was taken aback when she learned that Thomas had a new girlfriend and was expecting another kid.
Several allegations of sexual assault led to the former politician’s dismissal from Southern Charm at the end of the fifth season. He had his first hookup with Kathryn during the first season of the show. The two, who are already parents to their children Kensie and Saint, dated on and off up until 2016, when they decided to part ways.
After that, Thomas was in a relationship with Ashley Jacobs for more than a year before they broke up in 2018. The tumultuous relationship between the former couple, as well as the drama involving Kathryn, played out on seasons 5 and 6 of the Bravo series. After Ashley and Thomas broke up, she moved back to California and a few months later, in August 2019, she got engaged to Mike Appel. After keeping their wedding plans a closely guarded secret, the couple announced in June 2021 that they are expecting their first child together.
Thomas Ravenel's Career
Prior to launching his campaign for public office, Ravenel established a commercial real estate firm known as the Ravenel Development Corporation.
In 2004, Ravenel made a bid for election to the United States Senate in order to fill the vacancy caused by Fritz Hollings’ decision to retire. In the primary election for the Republican party, he finished in third place. After receiving support from Ravenel, Republican Jim DeMint was able to go on to win both the runoff election for the Republican nomination and the election overall.
After that, the Federal Election Commission issued a fine of almost $19,000 to Ravenel for unlawfully filing the required paperwork for the election. This was due to the fact that Ravenel had submitted the forms in an incorrect manner. In 2006, Ravenel ran for the office of South Carolina Treasurer and was successful in his bid, as he was able to defeat the incumbent Democrat Grady Patterson in the general election. During the Republican primaries in 2012, Ravenel showed support for Ron Paul.
Ravenel has a history with the cast of the television show Southern Charm on Bravo. Ravenel purchased Brookland Plantation in 2006 and remained a resident there until 2021, when he decided to sell the property.
The United States Attorney Reginald Lloyd handed down an indictment against Ravenel for federal cocaine distribution allegations in June of 2007. In the allegations that have been brought against Ravenel, it is alleged that in 2005, previous to his election as treasurer but after his unsuccessful run for the Senate in 2004, he purchased less than 500 grams of cocaine through an intermediary in Charleston, South Carolina. This took place in 2005.
Upon becoming aware of the allegations, Governor Mark Sanford removed Ravenel from his position as state treasurer and nominated Columbia attorney Ken Wingate to serve in that capacity on an interim basis. Ravenel will be replaced by Wingate. Prosecutors say that while this was going on, Ravenel made the decision to check himself into a treatment center.
In addition to that, Ravenel had been working as a volunteer for the presidential campaign of Rudolph Giuliani, serving as the candidate’s state chairman in South Carolina. According to sources with the Giuliani campaign, Ravenel resigned from his position when the indictment was handed down. After that, the campaign selected Barry Winn, who was already serving as a co-chair of the South Carolina finance committee, to take over for Ravenel.
Ravenel tendered his resignation as Treasurer on July 24th, 2007. Converse Chellis was chosen by the South Carolina General Assembly to complete the remaining portion of his tenure as a state representative.
After completing a treatment program in Arizona for substance abuse, Ravenel returned to court in September 2007 to enter a guilty plea to the charge of “conspiring to buy and distribute less than 100 grams of cocaine.”
Today, Thomas Ravenel works as the CEO and founder of Ravenel Development Corporation.
