Using his knowledge in food nutrition and physical exercises, he landed a job as Lisa Vanderpump’s fitness trainer. Vanderpump liked Caprioni’s enthusiasm to work, so she offered him a bartending role in her bar, Sexy Unique Restaurant (SUR) & Lounge.
Brett got introduced as a new cast member during the eighth season of Vanderpump Rules. The hit reality television series also added general manager Max Boyens and hostess Dayna Kathan. The Bravo Network-produced show chronicled the lives of Lisa Vanderpump’s SUR and TomTom Restaurant & Bar employees as they managed their personal and professional relationships.
Caprioni confessed that he’s not a huge fan of reality shows and had only seen two episodes of Pump Rules before being cast. During his short-lived one-season appearance on Vanderpump Rules, much of Brett’s storyline focused on his relationships with close friend Max and co-stars Scheana Shay and Dayna Kathan. Brett was involved in a love triangle storyline with Boyens and Shay after Scheana decided to use Brett to make Max jealous. Caprioni tried to date Kathan, much to Boyens’ dismay. After Brett realizes that his move to pursue Dayna is unwelcomed by Max, Brett decides to postpone pursuing her.
In January 2020, Instagram account FaceReality16 posted screen captures of old tweets and retweets by Caprioni from 2011 to 2013. The posts contained racist and sexist comments Brett made before he became famous. Lisa Vanderpump suspended Max and Brett for two weeks while she conducted a thorough investigation. After completing the inquiry, Lisa decided to let the duo back to her restaurant. She explained that her decision stemmed from her belief that the pair no longer share the same sentiments. On June 9, 2020, the Bravo network and its production company, Evolution Media, announced that Brett, co-stars Max Boyens, Kristen Doute, and Stassi Schroeder would not return to the reality show. The firings (15) came after fan outrage over Max and Brett’s racist and sexist tweets from the past, as well as Schroeder and Doute’s racist treatment of co-star Faith Stowers. Boyens and Caprioni’s old tweets came at a time when racism and racial injustice were at the height of everyone’s concern in the wake of the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd in police custody and raids.
As soon as news of his firing hit the news cycle, Brett expressed his regret and issued a heartfelt apology, saying, “While I’m disappointed to no longer be part of the cast, I respect Bravo’s decision. I continue to be truly sorry for the insensitive comments I made in the past and have worked within my community to repair the damage I’ve caused. I have learned a lot and grown from the experience, but I understand that it’s not enough. I will continue to do more regardless of my affiliation with VPR because it’s the right thing to do.” (16)

During the show’s reunion episode, Brett reiterated his remorse by saying, “It wasn’t OK then, it’s not OK now. It’s something I regret deeply, and it was just kind of making jokes with each other, like we’d literally be in the same room and just say stupid s–t to each other, and it was a dumb f–king thing to do. I’m doing my best to move forward and be the best person I can be.”
On the third episode of the reunion show, Lisa Vanderpump slammed the rumors that she was having an affair with Brett (17) while he was her fitness trainer and employee at SUR. She was not happy that SUR manager, Danica Dow, started the gossip by implying that something was happening between Vanderpump and Caprioni. Lisa expressed the significant and irreparable hurt that her employee would backstab her by encouraging a rumor that would affect her marriage with her husband, Ken Todd.
In a guest appearance in David Yontef’s Behind the Velvet Rope podcast, Brett Caprioni denied the rumor and maintained that his relationship with Lisa is purely platonic. He shared, “What I noticed about Lisa is she commands your attention and kind of runs the room, like a CEO, would or someone really important. It was an important feeling. Just like Lisa does, she wants to know about [you], like she cares about the people she talks to. That’s something I learned quickly is she quickly acted like she gave a sh*t and really wanted to listen to what I was saying. And that’s just a testament to the person she is.”
News tabloid TMZ claimed that reality show producers of Vanderpump Rules only became aware of the old tweets after season eight had already finished filming. They prepared for the backlash by re-editing (18) the series and phasing out a lot of Boyens and Caprioni’s scenes.
