Bowen Yang’s Early Life

Bowen Yang at his early age with his father and sibling.

Bowen Yang was born in the Australian city of Brisbane to parents who had moved there from China in the 1980s. His father, Ruilin, grew up in a straw and mud hut in rural Inner Mongolia on the Chinese mainland. Ruilin’s folks couldn’t read or write, but he spent hours reading by candlelight and got into college. Yang’s mother is a doctor who helps women give birth. Ruilin wanted to get his doctorate in mining explosives, so he and his wife went to Brisbane.

Yang’s father found out his son was gay from an “open chat window” on the family computer when he was seventeen. His folks didn’t like the news. They said that things like that “didn’t happen in China.” Yang’s father cried a lot when he found out, and even though he wasn’t religious, he wanted to “solve problems,” so he set up eight sessions of gay conversion treatment for Yang.

Bowen went to conversion therapy to make his parents happy, and he remembers being scared right away by the counselor’s use of religion and “pseudo-scientific” thinking to explain away signs that he was gay. In an interview for The New York Times, Maureen Dowd asked why his parents, who were both scientists, didn’t see the link.

Bowen said, “It was a cultural thing for them, this thing about masculinity, keeping the family line going, and keeping some things holy and sacred.” He added, “I wanted to meet them halfway, but I realized it had to be pretty absolute.” It was either one or the other.

Yang wanted to be a doctor because of Sandra Oh’s character Cristina Yang in “Grey’s Anatomy.” He took classes to get ready to be a doctor and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from NYU. Microbiology was given as Yang’s college major by mistake. After realizing that Oh’s acting skills inspired him, he became a comedian instead.

At NYU, he met Matt Rogers. Together, they started Las Culturistas, a weekly comedy show where Yang “unapologetically expresses his personality, story, and himself by sharing his experiences as a member of the LGBTQ community.”
