Gary Gulman is married to Sadé Tametria, with whom he was spotted for the first time in 2014. They reside in Harlem, New York, with their dogs. Throughout his life, Gulman has contended with depression and anxiety. In 2017, he took a break from comedy and entered a hospital for the treatment of clinical depression. With the help of electroconvulsive therapy, medication, and psychotherapy, he could resume his career, and he discussed his mental health struggles in his 2019 special “The Great Depresh.”

Gary stated in a 2021 CNN interview, “I’m doing great. I think kind of one of the benefits of having been through such a severe and extensive bout of depression is that I’m really aware. I would say vigilant about any sort of signs that I need to adjust my behavior in order to ward off another bout. I exercise nearly every day, and I eat right, and I go to my therapist, and I take my medicine. I’m hyperaware of what I need to do to make sure that mood and my mental health is maintained. I’m grateful for that.”

Gary Gulman’s Early Life

Gary Gulman before he was famous

Gary Gulman was born Gary Lewis Gulman in Peabody, Massachusetts, on July 17, 1970. By the time Gary turned 2, his parents, Philip and Barbara, had divorced, and he resided with his mother and two brothers. Gulman, whose family received food stamps, has stated that receiving a free school meal was “humiliating.” Gary has characterized himself as a creative and empathetic child, and he told Boston radio station WBUR, “I was really soft. I had a huge stuffed animal collection. I loved to paint and draw. And it’s just this ridiculous irony that I was also born with a lot of natural athleticism and size.”

Gulman desired to play hockey as an adolescent, but due to the cost, he played basketball instead. During Gary’s junior year at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, the assistant football coaches guaranteed him a college scholarship if he trained with them throughout the summer. Gary attended Boston College on a football scholarship, and during his time on the team, he realized he was depressed. Gulman began to see the college’s counseling director, who urged him to leave the football team, and eventually followed his advice.

Since he forfeited his football scholarship, he applied for financial aid and graduated in 1993 with a degree in accountancy. Gary then worked as an accountant for Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) for two years while performing at open bars at night. Later, as a substitute teacher, he frequently performed comedy routines for high school students.

Gary’s 2019 HBO special, “The Great Depresh,” was executive produced by Judd Apatow and featured his wife, mother, and psychiatrist. The Boston Globe referred to the special as “an excellent stand-up set” and a “portrait of an ordinary man, his well-deserved victory, and his desire to make life easier for those in despair.
