Trevor Noah’s Early Life

Trevor Noah's mother and him

Trevor Noah was born in Johannesburg, Transvaal (now Gauteng), South Africa, on February 20, 1984. Robert, his father, is of Swiss-German descent, while Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, his mother, is Xhosa. According to apartheid laws, Noah’s mother was classified as Black, and his father as White. Noah was classified as a person of color.

Noah emphasizes in his autobiography that his parents’ interracial relationship was unlawful at the time of his birth. The amendment of the Immorality Act in 1985 decriminalized interracial sexual relations and marriages one year after his birth. Trevor was reared by Patricia and her mother, Nomalizo Frances Noah, in the black township of Soweto. Noah began schooling at Maryvale College, a private Roman Catholic primary and secondary school in Maryvale, Gauteng, a suburb of Johannesburg.

Patricia once married Ngisaveni Abel Shingange in 1992; the couple had two sons. Shingange physically tortured both Trevor and his mother, and the couple was legally divorced in 1996. In 2009, following Patricia’s marriage to Sfiso Khoza, Shingange shot her in the leg and through the back of her head; she survived because the bullet went through the base of her head, avoiding the spinal cord, brain, and all primary nerves and blood vessels, and exiting with minimal damage to her nostril.

Shingange threatened Noah’s life over the phone when he confronted him about the shooting, prompting Noah to flee Johannesburg for Los Angeles. Shingange was convicted of attempted homicide in 2011 and sentenced to three years of correctional supervision the following year.
Noah stated that he hoped the attention surrounding the incident would increase awareness of domestic violence in South Africa as a whole. “For years, my mother reached out to police for help with domestic abuse, and nothing was ever done. This is the norm in South Africa. Dockets went missing, and cases never went to court.”

Noah has described himself as progressive and globally minded. However, he has clarified that he is a “progressive person” but not a “political progressive” and prefers not to be categorized as either right or left in the context of US partisanship.
