They are spending some time apart following a long-term relationship.

After 12 years of dating, Colombian singer Shakira and her longtime boyfriend, professional footballer Gerard Piqué, have announced they are separating in a joint statement released on Saturday.

“We regret to confirm that we are separating,” their joint statement reads. “We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.”

The couple had been living together for years and had two boys. They first met 12 years ago when the footballer appeared in Shakira’s music video for “Waka Waka,” the 2010 World Cup’s official song.
However, the news of their breakup comes after Spanish news site El Periodico stated that Piqué is back in his Barcelona home, away from her and the children.

According to PEOPLE, Shakira’s newest single, “Te Felecito,” alongside Rauw Alejandro, has listeners paying attention to the lyrics.

“For completing you I broke into pieces/They warned me, but I did not pay attention,” the lyrics read. “I realized that yours is false/It was the drop that overflowed the glass/Do not tell me you’re sorry; that seems sincere, but I know you well, and I know you lie.”

Prior to their split, she revealed back in February on the podcast “Planet Weirdo with Holly H” that they occasionally dispute over timing due to their diverse upbringings.

“My poor husband, slash boyfriend, slash baby daddy, whatever you want to call him, he has to wait up for me so long. He’s tired of waiting up,” she shared. “‘Cause Colombian time is not the same as Catalonian time, Spanish time.”
