If she weren't committed to accurately portraying the role that was entrusted to her, she wouldn't have won an Academy Award.
As part of the entire filmmaking process, Emma seemed to be pondering about losing weight for her role in “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” but she finally discovered a new way to represent the character without compromising her figure.
In a subsequent interview with Vogue, she spoke about the movie and the preparation she and the production team undertook, saying, “Preparing for shooting was simplified by the Covid restrictions in place at the time –- for a start, I couldn’t go off to a health spa and lose 20 pounds in anticipation of forthcoming nudity.”
“I decided that my character Nancy wouldn’t have done that either, and so it was doubtless for the best.” With regard to the film’s explicit scenes, she stated that Sophie Hyde, the film’s director, guided them into a nude rehearsal by getting into the same position as them.
“We three stood about, entirely bare, and talked about our bodies and what we liked and didn’t like about them,” she explained. “I had a much longer list of dislikes than either of them.”
“But in the end, it just reminded me of how levelling and also elevating being nude with people can be. It’s easier to be honest when there’s literally nothing to hide, and it’s unavoidably humbling. And after that, there’s nothing much to fear.”
“Before making Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, I had no idea how much I would learn about my attitude to my own body, to pleasure and to shame,” she added.
“How much I would laugh about the genuine silliness of so many of our responses to sexual pleasure, and how much I would cry about what is lost in life when it is repressed, ignored and punished.”
The Academy Award-winning actress ended her remark by expressing her hope that as many people as possible will see the movie and that it will have the same impact on them. Hulu now has “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” available.
Reactions to Emma Thompson Thought About Losing Weight For This Film Role
GOODLUCK TO YOU LEO GRANDE is a one location masterclass. So pure and poignant. Emma Thompson & Daryl McCormack have some of the best on screen chemistry I’ve ever seen.
