Kordell Stewart (born October 16, 1972) is a retired American football quarterback who spent 11 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL). He was known as “Slash” during his college football career at Colorado. Stewart is well known for the “Miracle at Michigan,” a Hail Mary throw that he completed in 1994 to beat Michigan. The Steelers took him in the second round of the 1995 NFL Draft.

Before becoming the Steelers’ regular quarterback in 1997, Stewart served in a variety of capacities with the team, including guiding them to an appearance in the AFC Championship Game. In 2001, he led Pittsburgh to a top seed in the American Football Conference (AFC) and a return to the conference title game, while also receiving Pro Bowl and AFC Offensive Player of the Year accolades. The following year, Stewart’s play deteriorated, and he was released by the Steelers. Following that, Stewart spent one season with the Chicago Bears and two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens as a backup quarterback. With 38 rushing touchdowns, he ranks fourth among quarterbacks.

Florence and Robert, his parents, reared him and his two brothers in Marrero, Louisiana, a community located across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Stewart’s mother died when he was twelve years old, after a protracted fight with liver cancer. To support the family, his father worked long hours at a variety of occupations. Kordell subsequently stated that his father was the most influential person in his life because he exemplified what it meant to have a good work ethic.

Kordell helped out around the house by cutting hair for his father, washing laundry, and making dinner. Stewart cut the hair of his football teammates on occasion during his high school and college years. He has a brother named Robert Stewart Jr. while the other one’s name is yet to be revealed.

Stewart played quarterback for the football squad at John Ehret High School in Marrero. Kordell was voted New Orleans Player of the Year and made the All-State squad during his final year of high school in 1990.

Kordell was awarded a scholarship to the University of Colorado in 1991. He went on to become one of their school’s most prolific quarterbacks, setting multiple Buffaloe records, including most passes completed, touchdown passes, and passing yards. Stewart led the squad to top-10 regular-season finishes in both 1993 and 1995, as well as winning the Aloha Bowl and Fiesta Bowl. Kordell was named a second-team All-American after leading the Colorado Buffaloes to a national rating of third in his senior year.

Stewart and his ex-girlfriend Tania Richardson have a son named Syre.

In 2009, at Atlanta’s Luckie Lounge, Stewart met Porsha Williams, the granddaughter of civil rights leader Hosea Williams. They married on May 21, 2011, in a grandiose wedding that aired on WE tv’s Platinum Weddings. On March 22, 2013, Stewart filed for divorce from Williams, claiming that their marriage was irretrievably damaged. According to initial accounts, he refused to pay any spousal support.

In March 2017, Kordell won a $3 million lawsuit against online personality Andrew Chad Caldwell, who made headlines in 2014 by declaring his freedom from homosexuality in front of a St. Louis church. Andrew Caldwell claimed to be in a gay relationship with Kordell, however this was later revealed to be untrue.

Stewart later wrote an essay for The Players’ Tribune about his experiences as a Steelers quarterback, including bigotry and false rumors of homosexuality.

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Stewart 60th overall in the 1995 NFL Draft. Kordell was a wide receiver and a running back throughout the team’s first two seasons. In 1997, he earned the starting quarterback job, guiding the Steelers to an 11-5 record and a trip to the AFC Championship Game, where they were defeated by the Denver Broncos.

After losing numerous important players from their AFC Championship Game team, the Pittsburgh Steelers struggled in 1998 and 1999. Stewart and the Steelers went 9-7 in 2000, coming close to making the playoffs.

Kordell guided the Steelers to a 13-3 regular-season record and the AFC playoffs’ top seed in 2001. Stewart was named to the NFL Pro Bowl after throwing a career-high 3,109 passing yards. The Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round of the playoffs, but they fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Kordell was replaced by quarterback Tommy Maddox in 2002, and he only appeared in seven games that season. He was signed by the Chicago Bears the following season, but he was dismissed after a string of subpar performances in 2003. Stewart was a backup quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens in 2004 and 2005, and after that, Kordell never played another game in the NFL. He did not, however, make his retirement public until 2012.

Kordell’s sexuality became a conversation point among the cast members of the program during season five. Kordell and his wife at the time, Porsha Williams, starred in season five of the popular Bravo series.

He and Porsha got married a year before they appeared on the show, and their wedding was shown on WE TV’s reality show Platinum Weddings.
