Terrell Fletcher started his football career when he was in college. He was the running back for the Wisconsin Badgers, the football team of the University of Wisconsin. During his time, they were Rose Bowl Champions and he was even named MVP in the Hall of Fame Outback Bowl.
Upon graduating, the San Diego Chargers selected Terrell Fletcher with the 19th pick in the second round (51st overall) of the 1995 NFL Draft. In 1996, Fletcher was a restricted free agent for the Chargers, but he was re-signed. In 2000, Fletcher led the Chargers in rushing yards, rushing for 384 yards on 116 carries.
Until Mike Tolbert in 2010, he was the only player other than LaDainian Tomlinson to lead the Chargers in rushing yards. The Chargers dismissed Fletcher to make way for newly acquired wide receiver Tim Dwight, who was obtained through trade from the Atlanta Falcons on draft day 2001. Fletcher agreed to re-sign at a later date.
He signed a four-year, $6.3 million contract to return to San Diego on April 23, 2001. In 2002, Fletcher played in only 10 games due to a sprained ankle he suffered in an early October loss to the Denver Broncos. The Chargers released Fletcher on February 27, 2003, freeing up $1.64 million in salary space.
Fletcher was known for his receiving skills out of the backfield, leading all Charger running backs in receptions for five consecutive seasons from 1996 to 2000. They also released a slew of other veterans at the same time, including safety Rodney Harrison and wide receiver Curtis Conway, among others. In 1996, he was second on the team in receptions with 61.
