On October 16, 2014, Hannibal Buress was recorded at The Trocadero in Philadelphia, performing an extended routine about sexual assault allegations against comedian Bill Cosby. Buress addressed Cosby’s legacy of “talking down” to young black men regarding their attire and way of life. He criticized the actor’s public moralizing by stating, “Yeah, but you raped women, Bill Cosby, so that kind of brings you down a couple of notches.” When the audience reacted with disbelief to Buress’s accusation (Philadelphia being Cosby’s hometown), he encouraged them to Google “Bill Cosby rape” when they got home.

Six months prior, Buress had performed the same Cosby routine with little response, but after the October performance was posted to the website of Philadelphia magazine, it went viral. Numerous publications investigated how Cosby maintained, as Buress termed it in his set, a “Teflon image” despite more than a decade of allegations of public sexual abuse. Hannibal Buress’ Controversy

Hannibal Buress faces multiple controversies

In 2017, Buress relocated from New York City to his hometown of Chicago and resided in the Wicker Park neighborhood. Buress is a Chicago White Sox supporter. He was detained in Miami in December 2017 for disorderly intoxication. Buress was captured on video footage ridiculing the arresting officers and demanding to know why he was being detained.

According to the arrest report, Buress was detained because he approached the police officers and refused to stop asking them to summon him an Uber. Buress later stated, “I asked the [officer] to call me an Uber, and he said, ‘No.’ He told me to leave the street. I go into this bar to get a phone charger for an Uber. He follows me into the bar and told me I’m too drunk to go inside. […] ‘If I can’t be on the street, where do you want me to be?’ I ask him. I was in a state of trying to get home. […] I don’t really believe I was at fault.” The case was subsequently dismissed.

According to the Miami New Times, the interrogating officer allegedly has a history of violence and was previously disciplined for an alcohol-fueled assault. In August 2019, Buress included the report in a televised stand-up routine he performed at the Olympia Theater in Miami. In July 2020, Buress filed a lawsuit against the City of Miami and the officers involved in the incident for constitutional violations. The case is being heard in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Buress stated in a September 2018 interview that he had “quit drinking” after several “alcohol-fueled situations” such as “arguments” and that how he had managed situations “was not smooth, just messy shit.”

In 2017, Buress evicted the building’s residential tenants to convert the property into Airbnb short-term rental units. In October 2019, he posted a tweet against Bernie Sanders’ demand for rent control. He asked for donations to an Illinois landlords association, prompting Twitter users to criticize him with the phrase “Hannibal Buress is a landlord.” Later, Buress regretted his now-deleted tweets, which he claimed were intended to provoke controversy. He attributed his criticism to the repercussions of his remarks about Bernie Sanders’ age. Buress stated that a housing charity rejected his $4,000 donation due to his perceived advocacy for landlords.
