Before Comedy Central

Roy Wood Jr. was a morning news correspondent for the Birmingham, Alabama radio station WBHJ 95.7 Jamz Hot 105.7 while in college. After substituting for the station’s regular comedian, Rickey Smiley, he decided to pursue a comedy career. In 1998, at age 19, Wood began his career as a stand-up comedian. He recalls passing his midterm exams to open for Tommy Davidson, effectively failing the semester. Wood then completed his final two years of college by doing the duties on weekends.

After graduating from college in 2001, Wood returned to Birmingham and was the chief writer/producer for the “Buckwilde Morning Show” (WBHJ 95.7 JAMZ) until 2006. He continued to work in radio, contributing prank calls and content to numerous national morning shows and Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole station on Sirius XM Radio. “My Mom Made Me Wear This” (2003), “Confessions of a Bench Warmer” (2005), and “I’ll Slap You to Sleep” (2007) were the titles of Wood’s three hoax call CDs. Numerous hip-hop mixtapes have included Wood’s practical jokes.

Wood later relocated to Los Angeles in 2007, and in 2010, he placed third on the seventh season of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and began hosting “The Roy Wood Jr. Show.” The Alabama Broadcasters Association awarded the program with the “Large Market Morning Program of the Year” title several years in a row. Wood also appeared on the TBS sitcom “Sullivan & Son” from 2011 to 2014. He played a recurring role in the first season, but he was elevated to a series regular in the second and third seasons. In 2014, “Sullivan & Son” was discontinued.

Wood’s debut stand-up comedy album, “Things I Think, I Think,” was released in 2013. In 2015, ABC cast him to star alongside Whoopi Goldberg in the comedy pilot “Delores and Jermaine;” however, the program was not picked up for an entire season.

At Comedy Central

Roy Wood Jr. joined “The Daily Show” as a correspondent in 2015. Wood relocated to New York City to accept the position. He stated that his stand-up comedy and journalism degree expertise prepared him for the position. In addition, he remarked that his guest appearances on ESPN and other related networks prepared him for “The Daily Show” by giving him experience with acting, timing, and character development.

“Father Figure,” his first Comedy Central stand-up special, premiered in 2017, accompanied by a Comedy Central Records album of the same name. In 2017, he was appointed as the new presenter of Comedy Central’s “This Is Not Happening.” 2019 marked the premiere of “Roy Wood Jr.: No One Loves You,” Wood’s second Comedy Central special.

As a comedian, Wood has appeared on numerous late-night talk programs, including “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Chelsea Lately,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and “Conan.” Wood has performed for the military on several Middle Eastern and Pacific USO tours.

In 2018, it was reported that Wood intended to film a television series in Jefferson County, Alabama. “The Jefferson County Probation” pilot began filming in May of 2019. A completed pilot for the program, now titled “Jefferson County: Probation,” was shot for Comedy Central in March 2020, and the series is in development. The program, co-created with Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks), follows two Alabama probation officers in Jefferson County. As a 19-year-old college student, Wood was apprehended in 1998 for stealing $400 to $500 worth of blue jeans and sentenced to probation.

Roy Wood Jr.’s Controversy

Roy Wood Jr. faces controversy over political views

Roy Wood Jr. roasts media scandals at White House Correspondents Dinner. Wood devoted significant time urging support for local journalism, observing that regional and local journalists are frequently the first to identify wrongdoing or misconduct. He didn’t shy away from addressing current media controversies. “To Tucker’s staff, I want you to know that I know what you’re feeling,” Wood said. “I work at ‘The Daily Show,’ so I too have been blind-sided by the sudden departure of a host of a fake news program.”

The comedian started his remarks by noting that media and government “are all unified under one thing, and that’s a scandal,” then looked at Fox News Channel and CNN. He also had a little time for former President Donald Trump: “Keeping up with Donald Trump scandals is like watching Star Wars movies,” Wood said. “Donald Trump is the only politician whose scandals got spin-offs on Disney.”

He also roasted Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, albeit lightly. “Is Joe Biden awake?” Wood asked. ” Say what you want with our president — when he wakes up from that nap. Work gets done. He might doze off, but then it’s infrastructure bill. Student loan forgiveness. Bring Brittney Griner home.”
