After singing her brand-new breakup anthem in collaboration with Bizzarap at the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Shakira dropped the beans amidst breakup with Gerard Piqué.
Shakira revealed details of their breakup for the first time on television during the most recent controversy between her and Gerard Piqué.
In January 2020, Shakira admitted that “marriage scares the shit out of me.” The couple joined the interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” wherein they were questioned again about their decision not to marry.
“To tell you the truth, marriage scares the shit out of me. I don’t want him to see me as the wife. I’d rather him see me as his girlfriend,” she responded. “The girlfriend,” Piqué added.
“Exactly. His lover, his girlfriend. It’s like a little forbidden fruit, you know?” she continued laughing. “I wanna keep him on his toes. I want him to think that anything’s possible depending on behavior.”
Relationship Complicated In January 2022
Shakira revealed some of the problems they had in their relationship in January 2022. She and Piqué argued over the singer’s tardiness and poor time management.
She said, as per Entertainment Tonight Canada, “My poor husband, slash boyfriend, slash baby daddy, whatever you want to call him, he has to wait up for me so long. He’s tired of waiting up,” adding, “Cause Colombian time is not the same as Catalonian time, Spanish time.”
“He’s very strict, very punctual. He’s been brought up in a football team where he’s a team player, and he has to be [punctual]. It’s like the army,” the singer said. “There is like a combination of an army slash kindergarten.”
Confirmed Breakup
The breakup apparently occurred after Shakira found the sportsman was well into a new romance with his now-girlfriend Clara Chia Marti while he and Shakira were still together.
June of 2022, after 11 years together, the couple declared their separation in a joint statement. “For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
Darkest Hours Of Her Life
Shakira shared in an interview with ELLE, “I’ve tried to conceal the situation in front of my kids. I try to do it and to protect them because that’s my number one mission in life,” she said. “But then they hear things in school from their friends, or they come across some disagreeable, unpleasant news online, and it just affects them, you know?”
“It’s really upsetting for two kids who are trying to process their parents’ separation. And sometimes I just feel like this is all a bad dream and that I’m going to wake up at some point. But no, it’s real,” she continued. “And all of this while my dad has been in the ICU and I’ve been fighting on different fronts. Like I said, this is probably the darkest hour of my life.”
Song That Addressed Piqué's Infidelity
Bizarrap and Shakira explain how they came to collaborate on “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” which broke numerous Guinness World Records. The Colombian pop artist sings about being betrayed by a spouse, being replaced by someone younger, and being forced to live next to her in-laws in the song “BZRP Music Session #53” with Argentine hitmaker Bizarrap.
She sings the word “salpique” (splash) in the first verse of the Spanish-language single, which many have interpreted as a not-so-subtle indication that the song is actually about her ex, as she pauses in between the word, so it sounds more like “sal-pique.”
She also mentions Clara Chia Marti, a woman Piqué has been linked to in recent weeks. She plays on his girlfriend’s name, too, when she sings “claramente” (clear) in the pre-chorus, stretching it out, so it seems like she’s saying “calara-mente.” Another lyric goes, “I’m worth two 22-year-olds / You sold in a Ferrari for a Twingo / You traded in a Rolex for a Casio,” in which the singer appears to refer to Marti’s age here.
The song was the fastest to reach 100 million views on the video social network in its first week, earning it the second accolade. It was the most listened-to song on Spotify in 24 hours, with fans playing it 14,393,342 times; it also totaled an incredible 80,646,962 in one week. Shakira claimed she was able to truly connect with her female fans with the song, which has smashed 14 world records.
Confirmed Relationship With Clara Chia Marti
Days after the song was released, Piqué posted an uncaptioned photo on Instagram. Many people perceive this as an indication that they are genuinely together.
A Reserved Place In Hell
Shakira said on the Mexican program “En Punto with Enrique Acevedo” in her first interview after releasing her diss track with Bizarrap. “I have realized that women are at a key moment for society. We are at a point where the support that we can receive from each other is very relevant; it is very important.”
She also paraphrased a quote from the late former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, in which she entirely agrees that “there is a place in hell reserved for those women who do not support others.”
Shakira performed her new breakup hymn, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” with her partner Bizarrap on “The Tonight Show,” starring Jimmy Fallon, on Friday, March 10, and following the jaw-dropping performance, she spilled the beans.
“I’ve had a very rough year after my separation, and writing this song has been so important to me,” the Grammy winner divulged. “It’s been a healthy way to channel my emotions.”
“I feel that after we put out this song, I not only felt like I had fans but a sisterhood of women who have been through the same things, who think the way I think, feel the way I feel, and had to put up with so much crap, the way I had to,” she added.
“I think that people really connect with music when it’s real, and it’s genuine; it comes from a real place. The thing with this song is that it has become like an anthem for so many women out there.” Not only that, but the song’s lyrics also appear to allude to Shakira’s financial difficulties.
How Did Shakira And Gerard Meet?
Shakira met Gerard Piqué, a Spanish soccer player, on the set of her song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” in 2010. Piqué, whose team won that year’s World Cup, was featured in the music video for the song, which served as the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Other renowned soccer players, such as Dani Alves, Carlos Kameni, Lionel Messi, and Rafael Marquez, also appeared in the video.
Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, told CBS’s “60 Minutes“ in 2020: “I wasn’t a soccer fan, so I didn’t know who he was. When I saw the video, I was like, ‘Hmm, that one’s kind of cute. ‘And then someone decided to introduce us.”
In an interview with Piqué, he shared that it “all started when we were together in South Africa, and I wrote to her.” He told Spain’s TV3, “She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony, and I asked her what the weather was like. It is the typical stupid question … it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again — she was singing at the final.”
A Little Of Shakira's Past
Shakira was still in a relationship with Antonio de la Rúa then, but they announced their separation in January 2011 after ten years of being together. They described it as “a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship.”
“Throughout this time, we have continued to work together hand in hand, have remained close, and have kept the details absolutely private until now,” their statement continued, adding that they “view this period of separation as temporary.”

Shakira and Piqué spent time together the following month, and in March 2011, they made their relationship public and official on all social media platforms. She shared a photo of them captioned, “Les presento a mi sol…” which translates to: “I present to you my sun.”
In January 2012, Shakira and Piqué made their red-carpet debut as a couple at the Fifa Ballon d’Or Gala, which took place in Zurich, Switzerland. And in January 2013, the two welcomed their first child, named “Milan.”
