Shakira and Gerard Pique's mother clashed after she assisted him in concealing Clara Chia's affair.
Montserrat Bernabeu, Gerard Pique’s mother, claims she has “tried everything” to make Shakira and Gerard Pique’s relationship work. While Shakira and Gerard Pique‘s split has been public for months, new reports provide insight into what happened between the couple.
According to a new report, the singer had a fallout with her mother-in-law. Sources said that Pique’s mother, Montserrat Bernabeu, was aware that her son was cheating on Shakira. Bernabeu even assisted Pique in concealing the affair, which was one of the reasons the Colombian pop star disliked her ex-boyfriend’s mother.
“It’s all because when the relationship between Piqué and Clara Chia began, they took refuge in a house that Piqué’s parents have in Cabrils, Spain,” Spanish journalist Laura Fa claimed.
Shakira has mentioned her mother-in-law several times since their separation, including in her number-one hit song Bzrp Music Session, Vol. 53. In the song, she describes her ex leaving her with “his mother as a neighbor” and “the press at the door.”
In another interview, Shakira stated that her former mother-in-law gave her bad advice when she forced the singer to cut her hair. She stated that “My mother-in-law wondered why I didn’t cut my hair, that it was a shame.” She didn’t like the idea. “I’m never going to listen to your style advice again!”
According to the Latin Post, the two women got into a heated argument. “Bernabeu punched Shakira in the face in front of Gerard and his children.” This incident, however, remained a rumor because no one from either camp confirmed that it occurred. Shakira allegedly placed a witch mannequin on her balcony, which faced Gerard Pique’s mother’s house. There appeared to be a reason for this, as Montserrat Bernabeu was suspected of abusing the Colombian singer.
The reports run counter to those published in the Spanish magazine Lecturas which people close to Gerard Piqué’s mother stated that she “did everything she could” to help their relationship.
Bernabeu also claimed in an interview that Shakira had told her children not to call her “grandmother” and that the couple’s split had hurt her personally. She and her husband also said they had made sacrifices for Shakira and were “open to dialogue” with her.
Her relationship with her grandchildren was already strained. Shakira even intends to leave Barcelona and relocate with her children to Miami. Pique’s custody of the children was granted to her in a court settlement.
