In a video provided to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s official Instagram account, the two-time Oscar winner was caught attending a government news conference in Kyiv, and could be seen meeting with him.
In a message translated by Newsweek, the Ukrainian embassy said: “The director came to Kyiv specifically to record all the events taking place in Ukraine and as a documentary filmmaker to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country.”
“Today, Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine while being in Ukraine. Our country is grateful to him for such a display of courage and honesty,” the statement continued adding, “Penn demonstrates the kind of courage that many others, including Western politicians, lack.”

According to the authorities, the actor initially traveled in Ukraine in November, prepping for his documentary by meeting with Ukrainian military personnel as tensions between the nation and neighboring Russia grew.
Penn’s prior forays into political and social issues have caused an uproar, particularly when he and Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo interviewed Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman while he was on the run.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for Sean Penn. You will always find Sean Penn.”

Sean Penn was with El Chapo a few years ago, what makes you think he’d be afraid of documenting the Ukraine-Russia war?
